Honest question since I only played on PS and got my money a long time ago: Has the PPA ever done anything?

I don't get where their supposed authority (or even reason for existing) comes from really.

It's clearly not their fault, it's just lol how they puff themselves up as this advocate and then come back from their big meeting with absolutely nothing that we didn't already know. It's gonna be a while, you don't say? Never could have figured that out after the DOJ went into radio silence for three months and counting after initially giving a timeframe of weeks

Here's our PPA representative expressing something other than "well, duh" when RICK SANTORUM came out against online poker

Who the **** cares what the "republican platform" is? Do you really think the republican party will ever give a flying **** about internet poker? Come on. It means nothing.

The real story is the unbelievable lobbying incompetence of existing internet poker businesses, including this site.

I thank you for your comments, but think you're greatly misinformed.

The GOP leadership pushed through UIGEA in 2006. Their past three platforms (2000, 2004, and 2008) advocated a ban on all online gaming, and the party leadership has followed through. Uh, yes....it matters.

Our opponents are strong and organized. Many religious groups really believe gaming destroys society. Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council, and other such groups fight us tooth and nail. The NFL strongly opposes our right to play as well, and they put their money where their mouth is. On top of that, there is no U.S. based online gaming industry, and most online poker players didn't write to Congress prior to the threat of UIGEA, under the assumption that the status quo of that day was better to a clear legalization.

When I first visited my Congressman's staff on this issue, the staffer acted like I was the only person in the district who didn't support an outright ban on online poker. All the votes up to that time bear that out. We lost a Senate vote 90-10 and a House vote 317-93 (HR 4411, the bill that became UIGEA).

Since then, we've stopped the forward progress of legislation against us, and are now on offense. However, our opponents have definitely not given up. We have a real fight on our hands.

So, what is it exactly that you think should be easy about getting this done? What do you see as incompetent that the rest of us don't?

of course it's not their fault but that doesn't matter at all. they're benign and ****ing useless, they've achieved absolutely the **** nothing over 6 years. they're going to change the world with a handful of facebook likes and retweets? there's no direction at all, the resources they get are basically pissed away, they carry no weight with the people that matter, have no say in ****ing anything and yet this is the only group supposedly poker players have to represent their needs. they're barry zuckercorn without the comic relief

The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) is a non-profit membership organization comprised of online and offline poker players. Our membership consists of enthusiasts from around the United States who have joined together to speak with one voice to promote the game and protect the right to play poker in all its forms.

The PPA’s mission is to establish favorable laws that provide poker players with a secure, safe and regulated place to play. Through education and awareness the PPA will keep this game of skill, one of America’s oldest recreational activities, free from egregious government intervention and misguided laws.

The PPA is committed to defending the rights of poker players. On behalf of our broad membership, we will promote and protect poker through advocacy work in Washington, D.C., and throughout the nation. The Poker Players Alliance will work with key lawmakers to ensure a thoughtful and productive dialogue that represents everyone who enjoys and wants to protect the game.

But the PPA’s most powerful resource is its membership base, the players. Through our Web site, www.theppa.org, and through direct contact with our members, the Poker Players Alliance is empowering poker players and enthusiasts to deliver positive messages about the game and why it should be protected to federal, state, and local elected representatives.
the PPA's mission statement. i read this and laugh every single time

my favorite is how the response is usually "well if you think it's so easy YOU do it!" you don't get points for trying, *******s, ESPECIALLY when you're asking people for money and have no ****ing viable direction once you get that money. the PPA is a net loss for poker players. it's a money pit we're stuck with because they've been around for 6 years doing the same bunch of nothing but it's too late to scrap them and start over with something new

poker players aren't really very good at getting together in groups on anything. i remember when UIGEA was being sent through the backdoor the poker legislation forum (if it even existed which tbh i don't remember) was largely made up of non-pros and nate silver. and UIGEA ultimately had a large impact on people's finances.

EDIT: i think a lot of poker pros made calls about UIGEA, etc., but the PPA is just not their scene at all.

So what exactly is the legal impediment to online poker at this point in states where poker is legal? DOJ has said they won't enforce the Wire Act with regards to poker, and the UIGEA only applies where poker is illegal in a particular state, right?

i guess i'm not so much angry that the PPA is ineffective. it's hard to imagine that a lobbyist group for online poker players could actually make an impact, so i hardly begrudge them on that front. it's that THEY don't realize how ineffective they are. or they do and are just throwing away so much of their (donated) resources at a losing battle for no reason at all. PPA will not succeed in making any legislative impact. not now, not ever. they're simply outmanned and won't ever have the funding required to have any say, especially compared to the opposition. if online poker ever passes it'll be a product of the wishes of higher powers that be (harrahs, mgm, tribes, etc). it's just the way they present themselves as the last champion for ipoker legislation that drives me ****ing insane.

so why keep this up? just to say you're doing it? a mobilization of (at best) tens of thousands of people all over the world to get legislation passed is going to do absolutely nothing. why not change the direction of the organization to focus strictly on smaller matters where they CAN make an impact?

If it were up to me they'd focus on (1) getting favorable decisions by judges in poker cases; and (2) getting referendums on the ballot in states where there's a chance to win.

Since all it takes is one senator to put a hold on any favorable poker legislation, I don't believe we're going to get a pro-poker bill anytime soon.

so the government is just going to earn interest on 200 million per month for as long as they see fit then when they decide they want to give the money back to players, it almost certainly won't be at 100% value and that'll be taxed as well (not to say anyone really should have expected anything different when the DoJ decided to take it upon themselves to repay american players rather than let stars do it themselves)

what a racket!

god bless america

This gets a special LOL Gubment.

It would be great if the Senate would, just once, make a minority member actually filibuster when they threaten to.
