hate the gawker sites. it's ridiculous linkbaiting/traffic whoring, just for a slightly more intelligent audience than huffpo or whatever. rip other outlets for being sanctimonious and shallow when it's convenient, be sanctimonious and shallow themselves when it's convenient. bothers me because a) deadspin, at least, used to be something better b) their constant criticism of other media outlets establishes standards that they themselves don't meet.

i mean, both sites are still good at what they aim to do - i still visit deadspin probably twice a week and i can't go to gawker without opening like 10 tabs of articles that at least seem interesting - just wish they had, like, any scruples whatsoever. jezebel is obviously jezebel, nothing more needs to be said there.

absolutely. that's not 'privacy' - i can take a photo of someone walking down the street, but sharing it on a website where anyone can see it i think is a violation of that person's privacy.

what if someone is in a picture you took and put on your personal online photo blog instead of uploading to reddit? same violation? are you only judging based on intent?

If someone else happens to be in it, I think that's fine. I'm judging on intent, yeah - if the picture is just of someone walking down the street, and is clearly not of something else, it shouldn't be shared. And I'm not distinguishing between one's photo blog and reddit - so long as it's readily accessible to anyone who stumbles on it, it's one and the same imo.

I agree wholeheartedly with all of this except for the part about actually visiting the sites. The whole gawker family is legitimately ****ing terrible and gets me madder than just about anything else on the internet.

I'm not super wild about Gawker. Some of Deadspin is good, and about 80% of what Lindy West does for Jezebell is tolerable to good. I do think talking about it like it's a big monolithic thing with one editorial policy or approach is wrong. They employ a lot of crap authors, but some are pretty damn awesome.

I must be so bad at the internet. Never been to Reddit.. never heard of Gawker or Jezebell.

Problem is Jalopnik isn't bad, especially Alex Lloyd's essays on how to be a faster driver (race driver).

Also, trolling the Jezzies is amazing.

The author of the Gawker reddit piece isn't necessarily hypocritical. I think it's unfair to project institutional problems on an individual writer.

The much, to me, more meaningful part of Gawker v reddit has be reddit's response in blocking links to Gawker and banning people posting said links and generally doing a bunch of things that are much more legitimately hypocritical than anything Gawker did.
