It's a delicate subject to approach, because while a plethora of studies exist showing the effect of violent content on children, one also wants to stop short of endorsing whole-sale censorship or blanket policies to "protect" people from everything harmful. "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" is disgustingly abused to restrict a lot of liberties. All of us here are aware of that. I do still think the responsibility falls on the individual parent.

Also, based on what I've learned, there's a difference between effects on children under the ages of 10-12 and children who are into their teens/HS. I obviously don't adhere to the notion of 16YOS PLAYING VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES ALWAYS RESULTS IN VIOLENT PEOPLE, otherwise I and a lot of other people on 2+2 would be uber violent at this point!

Ex: http://www.med.umich.edu/yourchild/topics/tv.htm

Edit - I won't address your question re: the Daniel Pearl video, though, because I think it's just troll bait. We don't need studies to discuss why watching that might really screw with a 10yo's head. They struggle enough with being afraid of monsters in their closet as is.

We must show snuff films to middleschoolers

It obviously can't have any harmful effect, so results at worst would be neutral

It's like talking about crime being a danger in a community and spouting off about a nearby nuclear reactor.

to find something to relate to a statement as stupid as "watching a guy get murdered on the internet has no negative impact on young kids" you have to look outside the forum

Not all religious types are Catholics, but all Catholics are religious types. Since I was trolling you in particular.......

I honestly do think you are off base here tho. For a kid, what is the difference btw seeing the Pearlman video and seeing similar scenes in a R rated movie. A kid that stumbles on it is really going to comprehend the magnitude of difference regarding what is going on? Before you read that article were you terrified that your kid would stumble on Saw on HBO, and freaking out about what would happen if they did?

It's a valid point: the fantasy vs reality distinction. I'm not really qualified to analyze it, but I can't think of any movie a child would reasonably watch otherwise that contains that level of realistic graphic violence. I can't even think of one period.

I'm not catholic obv.

Isn't Saw one? Haven't watched it or the Pearlman video.

Obv would stop them froming seeing Saw, but thought of them somehow watching it would not be a major concern.

On a related note, you know what has me terrified for my kids and keeps me up at night
