jackets,

Yeah, that's fair. And this stuff isn't easy. But we do our best. This forum in partiuclar degenerates very quickly when the tone and standards of the dialogue are allowed to slip. So sometimes, I'm going to err on the side of avoiding bad precedent vs. maybe letting something slide. If I catch things right away, I frequently just delete the posts, but I usually don't since I don't read every thread - and once some stuff has been out there for a while, its better to let people know we're trying to enforce it, even if the line can be fuzzy.

Fortunately, the punishment of (in general) a one or two day ban is pretty minor, and since we don't use infractions, its not like it puts the poster in a corner either. I think most would agree that the people who have had really lengthy bans here have aggressively sucked - the casual, inadvertent screw-ups, are pretty rare, and if someone habitually screws up the same way, it's usually in indicator that there's a bigger issue.

I really just cant imagine getting offended over anything someone says on the internet. if someone simply sucks like agdci/g1212 or throws tantrums and detracts from the quality of the board then those people should be gotten rid of.

i guess posting absolutely disgusting pictures would be the only thing i would delete.

this forum is pretty awesome though 'cause the awful posters just get re-trolled in a funny way

in politards the awful posters get engaged and ruin the forum

It's not just about if someone is offended or not. Some stuff just isn't acceptable regardless. Factoring in intent also matters. It's as much about establishing reasonable standards of discussion (which were nonexistent years and years ago in SE) so that the forum as a whole is accessable to a broader range of people and the signal:noise ratio has an opportunity to be very favorable.

i guess this is a tough concept for some people but 2+2 is a business being run for the express purpose of making money.

i mean personally i agree with you. if it was my site i would ban spam, anything illegal and prob blatant porn and that's about it. but it's not my website.

yeah I know that they should do whatever they think will get them users/page views/money, I'm just not sure who these people are within 2p2s main demographic of 20-30 year old men that get bent out of shape over minor things people say.

I always assume people whining in ATF dont really care and are just the type of trolls who like to complain for the sake of complaining

its good for all participants to adhere to common boundaries when conversing, even if those boundaries are arbitrary. it shows a level of respect for the people you are talking to and the conversation itself.

it also helps to define the nature of the discourse. the boundaries depend on the context of the conversation, you probably wouldn't swear at a job interview but you would when with your friends.

in theory it shouldn't matter but it does.

I'd say that it's a very shortsighted point of view. Also, the way we got the posters two years ago, in many cases , was because the SE forum had been cleaned up several years prior, going from a niche forum on this site to one of the biggest/busiest, in large part due to cleaning it up so it wasn't like Politards. So, you're happy now, but that's in no small part imo because of the exact thing that you seem to be arguing against.

And let's be clear. I don't care how much money this site makes. I like the forum and think it's the best sporting discussion forum on the internet that I've seen. Because of that, I want it to stay healthy and vibrant. That means it needs to be accessible to new posters due to natural turnover. This also happens to make Mason the most money, which is fine, but it's simply a byproduct of the fact that I gain a ton of utility from this forum and want to see it thrive.

Having a hard lined approach to racism, sexism, etc, is the correct decision for here imo. If other people want to read that, go find some place the allows it, I don't think the vast majority of us here want to see it in any form and we shouldn't have to cater to a vocal minority of bigots.

A) I 100% agree with Clark and TSC

B) what are we missing out on by not allowing those type of "jokes?" nobody who posts here is Louis CK or Chappelle who can work those areas.
