but weren't the categories usually like:

1. NFL
2. NBA
3. MLB
4. NCAAF

then the odd NCAAB, Golf, Tennis, or something thrown in? and the questions for the fringe sports were like way easier than for the "majors"?

but yeah, he knew a [censored] ton of random sports crap, assuming that the show was legit.

Definitely legit. There are people out there like him. He's rare but it's not like he was unimaginably smart or anything. What I found most impressive was not only did he know the answers but was able to recall really obscure names with a clock on him. Plenty of times where I "knew" an answer but couldn't pull the name up in time then he'd answer and I was like "yeah - that guy". But that's much harder to just recall on the spot with a clock on you.

72off: also the olympics, and WNBA, and the NHL wasn't completely ignored either. the fringe sports questions were easier, but he was probably better at them than he was on regular sports questions.

There was quite a bit more non-NBA/NFL/MLB than you remember I think. And I don't remember him ever missing a tennis question

Yeah schuab knew questions from random sports, but even his encyclopedia knowledge of just the top three sports and college football and basketball was insane. Usually people know about two sports really well.

Tony Reali is pretty cool too. Ditka is also dope, because he's brain dead.

have you ever seen someone be more wrong (on a consistent basis) than michael smith? (from espn)

and i couldn't listen to svp's radio show (partly bc of russilo)

Edit: eric mangini called smith out for being wrong so often today too lol

Michael Smith is a caricature of what he used to be, unfortunately. He was good when he was just on ATH but now that he's a paid personality its like he has to go overboard and say outrageous stuff. So he's not "terrible" but isn't good either, i'll give you that

If I'm watching/listening to the ESPN guys, it's almost always on as background. I have basically no idea on any of those guys.

schu,

ESPN obviously actively coaches their personalities to say outrageous and extreme stuff. Every single person I can think of who I knew before and after ESPN gave them run got far more extreme the more run ESPN gave them.

i did enjoy smiff when he was first started to appear on espn. thought his opinions were actually refreshing for that network. i would prefer to only see him on ath now, where he's somewhat good.

he got carried away on nnl, and has gone overboard, as you say. i used to dvr that show when it came out, now i rarely watch it. they got away from the numbers game, and started the "whoever says the most obnoxious stuff wins" game.

ya, good point clark. does anyone remember a show mike lupica had on espn? i seen something online about it, but don't remember seeing it. and im glad i didnt. he just tries way too hard.

You know who used to be really reasonable and insightful? Stephen A Smith. Dude was really refreshing when he first came up, I think on CNN then FOX IIRC. Then ESPN decided to try and create a star out of him and he turned into a joke.

@ everyone here:

2+2ers like to say ESPN is bad and they never watch it, but im not stretching when i say ESPN likely accounts for 90%+ of the non-in-game sports TV time of this board, right?

obv karak. theres really no competition. for nba, you watch nbatv, nhl etc. but for everything in one place, theres only espn. and it's not wrong for everyone to state how bad the espn personalities are. its true.

ya clark, i liked SAS too. especially the quite frankly show. i cant believe its been like 8+ years since it was canceled.
