Yep, the guy from Georgia who openly roots for Georgia Tech and the Carolina Panthers is a Lions fan. Guess again.

Yeah but that was for being generally terrible, not for Katrina jokes. The fact hurdda hadn't been perma'd before this is astounding.

You do have to give that guy props of some kind coming back in the thread as "cowhurrda" and "TheLionsHurrda" after his original acct was perma'd because of his posting in that thread. He definitely does not understand subtlety.

Was out of the house for the game so I just read through some of the posts in that thread that got people banned. Can someone explain to me what it is about New Orleans that makes otherwise normally reasonable posters think that wishing for / laughing about natural disasters and the like is okay? It's far from the first time this has happened.

Not excusing it, but I think it's because people at this point have become very normalized to Katrina. For the past 6 or so years, every time the Saints are on TV, Katrina is mentioned at least once, so it's fresh in everybody's minds when watching Saints games, and for dumb people with no original humor, it's an easy target.

Are you familiar with Rudy giuliani's 2008 presidential campaign? It was basically something something 9/11, love me. It was ****ing absurd. A typical saints game is something something katrina, love NO.

And katrina was just as much a man made disaster as it was natural.

...and nobody goes around saying "I wish two more planes would hit Rudy Giuliani's campaign headquarters."

Not that it's even a good comparison, since it's the announcers talking about Katrina, and not the people or players of New Orleans.

Obv mod troll is obvious. I grew up in the same county as Detroit btw, it'd be pretty nuts to describe my area as a disaster.

I guess I should have made it clear, I don't mean to excuse those posts. They're horribly inappropriate. You wanted to know why, and my post described why. That's all there really is to it.

totally fine to keep mentioning Katrina since the main area affected by it is still in ruins, plus since it largely affected poor people its easy for a lot of people to forget.

People just get tired of hearing the media say the following phrases during nearly every NO televised game (which have been many, since Katrina hit):

"Winning this game would mean soo much for this city"
"This city has the best fans in all of football"
"This city loves Reggie Bush and Reggie Bush playing here and helping the community has been soo good for the NFL and the city"
"This city has rebuilt itself since Katrina hit and is stronger than ever, but there is still much work to do."
"You all remember what Katrina did to this stadium and Tom Benson blah blah blah..."

ad nauseum.

etc.... 6+ years after Hurricane Katrina.

Seriously, if the media stopped trying to tie in every god damn positive play/game with Katrina the haterz would have zero reasons to hate on the team/city. It's not quite as bad as calling the Cowboys "America's Team" though.
