At the Drive-In was awesome, I kinda liked Mars Volta's first album, but each successive album got worse. the one time i saw them live (right after Frances the Mute was relased), they sucked.

De Loused in the Comatorium and Frances the Mute are tremendous albums. Omar (the lead singer you don't like, who is pretty awesome, but if you go into one of their shows not expecting 8-13 minute progressive rock songs with high vocal ranges as a Soundgarden fan, well, you are likely to be going "wtf?") has released 14 solo albums in the last 18 months. Most are quite good.

It sucks when good bands that have a totally different sound to the headliner they're opening for. I've seen many great double bills/openers, but the crowd obviously wasn't there for the opener and the atmosphere sucks for a very deserving band.

At The Drive-In was great, obv. Both Sparta and Mars Volta had some alright stuff, but by and large were garbage.

Also, WTF at The Mars Volta opening up for a Chris Cornell act?

I'd say The Mars Volta (even if we say they're last 3 records are mediocre) has a much, much better discography then Sparta, and even if they were one of my favorite bands as I was discovering music/in HS, it's of equal quality to ATDI (which we are overrating here, as much as it pains me to say).

The Mars Volta is much better live then Sparta, obviously never saw Cedric and Omar tripping on acid playing with ATDI.

De-Loused was a great album. Frances The Mute is very strong as well. Then I really lost interest past Amputechture.

I have never heard anyone say TMV was good live, that sound is just far too complex to provide a good live show. Not to mention they're all ****ing junkies.

I enjoyed them both times I saw them, thought they were very strong. Drunkship was a particular highlight. We were in a private box for the first show and the bros in the box w/us all were impressed with them enough to ask us who they were every 5 minutes.

TVOTR had a similar problem re-creating their studio sound live for a while, but both are pretty damn great live now. But TMV don't really have any mainstream/accessible live tracks compared to TVOTR, where a setlist for TMV opening will probably be like 5-6 songs of 6-8 minute length.

I thought they quit all the hardcore stuff after the death of their friend, which was the inspiration for the (only comprehensible after 15 listens) lyrics to De-Loused (Wiki confirms this). Basically all of the ATDI stuff was when they were opiate crazy. Guess losing 2 friends/bandmates to ODing might wake you up.

Heh, they had a few songs that were of an infinite minute length. Like, great little song for 5 mins, then it quickly devolved to wtf are they doing? This was perfectly good now they're ruining it by rambling on interminably. The eminently dislikable lead singer didn't help matters.

I assume whoever said they were better in studio than live is correct, though their music really was ok live. But they had two dudes in the band with their apple computers/mixers/keyboards and lord knows I couldn't once tell that they made a difference. Drummer was meh, bassist was pretty competant, lead guitarist dominated the performance when the frontman wasn't being an ass.

Juan Alderete used to play bass for Racer X back in the day, he's a ****ing legit player. Really like his style, great chops.

Jon Theodore was the drummer for the first two albums I believe, he is incredible. Then he left when he got tired of the theatrics, iirc. Don't know who's playing for them now but he's probably nowhere close to Theodore's level, that's almost for sure.

Yeah, bassist was fine. Drummer was a brother with a high top fade and california beach bum shorts/sneakers.

Pridgen (drummer 06-09) was really ****ing good. Now it's a young kid who is also really good(edit he apparently left after last album). Didn't think they could replace Theodore, was wrong.. Didn't think they could replace Pridgen, was wrong. Their current drummer hasn't been used for any actual albums, so I have no idea how good they are.

edit: Looked at the setlists clark, couldn't recognize any but one of the songs, so they're all new/to be on the new album. So it's all new "might be good but probably isn't even completed" stuff.

I saw TMV live in 2005 I think and they were really good, the only minor disappointment was that they didn't play Frances The Mute which is one of my favourites even though before the show I was hanging around at the fence near the backstage area shouting at anyone walking by, telling them to play it.

I'm pretty sure they started their set with a 30 minute rendition of Drunkship of Lanterns during which time probably a third of the audience left but that's probably standard for a TMV show at a festival.

good stuff! that must have marked the first and only time that i've ever convinced someone of anything on the internet. this is a proud day to be sure.

yeah that whole album is pretty great, iyam, probably my current favourite of theirs. when people say that they don't like any Radiohead other than The Bends or OK Computer, i often wonder if they've given In Rainbows a listen. for my money it might be their most poppy and easily accessible album. just a lot of pretty straight forward rock songs.

Hail to the Thief seems pretty criminally slept on too by most, but that's another story for another day.

I would like to retract my earlier statements, Radiohead are ****ing bosses. OK Computer and Kid A are superb, still gotta get into the others. The National Anthem is probably my favorite song, or maybe Exit Music (For A Film).

It's always flaming youth that puts Exit Music at the top of the list.

Most of the non mainstream bands (that are still huge popular acts) people here or in the EDF will recommend might take a few listens to enjoy. I didn't go crazy over Radiohead or The National after more then a few listens to their best received albums. But once you start listening to more then a few of these bands, you're suddenly giddy anticipating a new Panda Bear album.

Idk if others feel this way, but I was hooked on the National as soon as I heard Fake Empire.

I just started watching a video performing this song with Beirut last night in Switzerland.

I got to see The National twice last year when I went to Lolla (one at an after show). Both were amazing and I was first in line (well, a friend saved me a spot) for their autograph session. Unlike a few of the other bands they seemed genuinely happy to meet their fans, would answer questions, didn't rush you through. Talked to you like you were a normal person, asked your name, where you were from, signed the stuff to you personally. Also didn't expect a good sense of humor from them for their live shows either. Can't really say enough nice things about them.

So if the Pink Floyd doesn't reel in the Sparty chicks, hit 'em with the Radiohead amirite?
