difference is 'r' is a consonant, 'i' is a vowel. there are various words where g takes on a j-like phoneme when it precedes a vowel. gypsy, gentle, gigantic, gyroscope, general, genital, etc. of course there are also words where it takes a guh sound, point is that the j sound is pretty common
