Jesus. It's not lol'ing. It's not feeling bad for people who knowingly had their money on a shady operation. I feel bad for them being deluded into the thought that they could build a life in that manner.

Man, I'm tired of these misconceptions directed towards the skypers. It truely is ignorant. It's really slowly dissolving, I think people bottled in their hatred beforehand but this ruling/indictment really brought out the true feelings in posters.

I'll give you a quick breakdown:

It really isn't that surprising. There is a whole lot of poker bitterness on 2p2, SE in particular because it has a ton of people who came for the poker but stayed for the sports.

It's sad to a degree, but not really surprising when you look at it.

Plus se is full of haters anyway. Sort of surprised there wasn't a "lol online poker" thread.

Also, I'm no Karak but people are being pretty absurd appealing to the "laws" and "shadyness" to defend their feelings on this whole thing (ranging from apathy to happiness, wherever you may lie).

This whole thing is a big grey area legally. You act like the the UIGEA has always been into effect. The poker boom started before 2006 guys. Just because the half the government wants to enforce their morality on others and the other half wants their piece of the action, and because of this chose to implement new laws forcing this "shadyness" doesn't change right and wrong.

True, but also true that at least a portion of the "poker bitterness" is earned.
Disagreement with the law aside (and really, who on 2p2 DOESN'T disagree with UIGEA?) complaints about the lameness of the law are a red herring here. Yes its a stupid law. But we've still had plenty of warning that something bad could happen at any time, (and from the standpoint of fall 2006, I think we had a pretty good run) so relying on the dumbness of the law to prevent its enforcement and so not making contingency plans was probably foolhardy.

Having thought about it a fair amount, my position on this is that I feel pretty bad for people up to the amount they have in limbo, and not really much after that. I don't take any joy for their plight, because the job market is hard right now. But I don't really mourn for them no longer being able to make the outsized amounts that many online pros were making for really not a lot of work in terms of hours, (edit to add: and I completely include myself in this, fwiw) and I feel almost no sympathy at all for the growing pains that may be forced upon people who don't wish to conform to a "normal" job.

Nice post Seth, that's exactly how I feel and I wish that's how I explained it earlier. If that sentiment makes me an *******, so be it, I'm cool with that for a bunch of reasons.
