I didn't get the movie either, but I was pretty captivated by it, if that makes sense. I've been told that you need to be Jewish to get it, so I'm thinking about converting just to satiate my curiosity.

I am jewish, but I really liked A Serious Man. I can see why goys didn't like it because they really perfectly capture a lot of the cultural elements and archetypes within the Jewish community.

My rankings of their movies go something like this
Tier 1: Blood Simple, NCFOM, Fargo, The Big Lebowki
Tier 2: Millers Crossing, The Man Who Wasn't There, A Serious Man
Tier 3: Burn After Reading > Hudsucker > O Brother
Tier 4: Intolerable Cruelty > Raising Arizona
Tier 5: The Ladykillers.

I haven't seen Barton Fink in a relatively long time and I have no idea where it fits on this list, but probably comparable to the Tier 3 movies, but nearly impossible to compare as they are so different.

Burn After Reading has a bunch of really great performances (Malkovich, Pitt, Richard Jenkins, McDormand, Simmons) and the first time I watched it I was pretty lukewarm on it. The second time around it is a much better movie because you can see how all the moving pieces in the first and second act and it prevents the third act from feeling they committed deus ex machinas.

Intolerable Cruelty is a really well executed and high concept romantic comedy, having said that it is still a rom-com. It's a movie for which an audience doesn't really exist except for film critics who are forced to watch a bunch of ****ty rom-coms and will enjoy this as a change of pace. Most guys don't want to watch the movie because it is a Clooney-Zeta-Jones rom-com and most girls would hate that it is much darker than almost all rom-coms and wouldn't find any humour in the ending.

Edit: I still like all these movies, even The Ladykillers is a movie that I didn't feel like turning off at any point and is a perfectly fine movie to stumble upon on cable, but one I would never go out of my way to see again.

You know what, I liked Intolerable Cruelty. It might not be their best work but it's still an extremely well-made movie. Eff the haters.

I love The Hudsucker Proxy by and large because I love love love screwball comedies (think His Girl Friday), and stuff with slight elements of magical realism, and this one nails it; it's pitch-perfect down to so many details.

In his defense, the Milkshake scene is completely hilarious. If he was talking about Coen Bros. still, I'm just speechless.
