Its funny to see you use the word logic considering some of your posts in this thread.

Seriously though, why do Pac10/Big10 fans get so fired up about people thinking the SEC is awesome? It just makes you see like jealous little brothers.

Because it's annoying. Why are you fired up enough about it to make 8 posts in this thread?

Beyond that, the ridiculous "sec is head and shoulders above every other conference" notion plays a huge role in determining who gets into the national title game.

For example, if UGA goes 10-2 (Loses to to Bama and at LSU but wins the SEC) and Oregon goes 11-1 (loses to Cal) who do you think is going to be ranked higher? If, say WVU or Ohio State goes undefeated and takes the first bid, which one of those teams do you think is going to get the second BCS bid?

If Florida goes 11-1 (loses at Tennessee early) and South Florida goes 12-0, and USC goes 12-0, who do you think is going to the title game? 11-1 Florida or 12-0 South Florida?

If LSU goes 11-1 but loses early at Auburn , USC goes 12-0 and a team like Wisconsin or Wake Forest goes 12-0, who do you think is going to the title game? 11-1 LSU or 12-0 Wake/Wisc?

I can almost guarantee you that in each of those cases, the SEC team with more losses is going to get picked because of all the BS hype.

Teams already on the radar like WVU or Texas or ASU could probably sneak past them, but if someone like Oregon or Cincinnati or USF or Cal or Oklahoma state makes a surprise run at it, I guarantee they get left out if there's a tough call to be made.

Bears,

I hope to god that SEC list wasn't in order of best to worst. Listing a Nat'l champ co-favorite as third best in conference is a travesty of the highest order.

Which list? I don't think I intentionally ranked SEC teams anywhere.

To me, LSU, Florida and Georgia are significantly ahead of the rest of the conference at this point, but there's not much separation between them.

I think that LSU and Florida are both ahead of Georgia by a slight bit, but I couldn't pick between those two.

UGA, for playing a tough schedule and winning the toughest conference in the nation, whereas Oregon dropped a game to a fake-QB factory that collapses every November. If UGA goes 10-2, and Oregon goes 11-1, and they met in the Neutral Dome on January 1, what would the line be?

I'd actually bet South Florida. Going undefeated has a lot of cachet.

How many points do you think 11-1 LSU would be favored by over 12-0 Wake or Wisconsin? I bet it's double digits in Wake's case.

Then why did Ohio State and LSU play in the title game last year instead of USC?

That's kind of a wierd question to ask. If UGA and Oregon played right now, UGA -7 easy. But IF Oregon went 11-1 (and beat USC, UCLA, Cal, Purdue, etc.) and UGA went 10-2, then I say it's a pick em.

Likewise, if LSU plays Wake right now it's LSU -15 or -16 and probably -10 against Wisconsin... but IF those teams went undefeated then it's different.

That basically means Oregon and Wisconsin get some very solid QB play, and Wake is just really good.

The counter to that is... if USC played Ohio State in the title game last year, what would the line be? I'd bet it would have been around USC -14... 10 at the minimum.

Wat? The actual USC/Illinois line was -14.

I'm sure a USC/Ohio St line would have been much much less.

SEC has the greatest coaching staff since the Packers of the mid 90's.

The AFC South would destroy the SEC, LDO

I don't really ever come in SE, but I just want to say it wouldn't have mattered. LSU would have blown out USC, because they were essentially playing a home game.

Edit to add: I like how you admit the SEC is the top conference, but still don't want people to talk about it.

I watched a replay of the Navy-Towson game the other day, does this mean that I can assume that one of them is the top team in the country? I mean I did WATCH the game.

By most conferences, he of course can say all I-AA conferences, the MAC, Sun Belt, etc... That should be more than half of all conferences.

Hey, Navy had a kid go for 350 yards rushing or whatever, that's Heisman material right there, and any team with a Heisman trophy winner must be the top team, right?

USC didn't make the title game because they freaking lost, at home, to STANFORD.

ummm... SEC is the best conference year-in and year-out

they are not the best conference every year

they are not super superior to every other conference

they are the best conference though

expect the hype machine to increase with the SEC/ESPN tv deal into the future

OMG... La Tech beat Miss St
WIU had Arkansas on the ropes
etc
blah blah blah

I've never understood the love affair SEC fans have with the other teams in the conference. It's pretty bad when fans are chanting "SEC, SEC!" As an SEC team plays a Big Ten team. Can you imagine a Michigan State or Ohio State fan chanting "Big Ten, Big Ten!" as Michigan plays Florida? Not a chance. We should just start calling SEC the University of the SEC, and that way you can just cheer for all the teams at once. FWIW my favorite team is Notre Dame, so I don't have a conference affiliation, but if Notre Dame were in the Big Ten, I can guarentee the only way I'd possibly cheer for Michigan is if they were playing USC. In that case, I'd hope for a 0-0 tie with each team losing 7 starters to torn ACLs. You're supposed to HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE your conference rivals, not have some love affair with how good they are.

this came up in one of the college conference threads last year

it was pretty shocking how different people are across the country about this

as you said, most of the teams in the Midwest could give two craps about the other teams and are more likely to root against them than for them in intra-regional match-ups

however, I will be pulling for Ohio State this year against USC simply because the BigTen needs a little pick me up if they want to keep getting 2 BCS bids
