one thing that still vexes me is that ippei -- allegedly one of the biggest degens of all time with no respect for laws -- didn't make a single wager on baseball despite sitting in a dugout every day for a decade.

A lot of these guys speak and especially understand way more English than they let on. They're often self conscious about how they speak so they'd rather go through an interpreter. It also lets them deal with the American media a lot less and helps them avoid saying something wrong and getting crucified for it.

I still remember during the Yankees game them showing David Wells and Hideki Irabu having a full on conversation for several minutes. I'm pretty sure Wells wasn't speaking Japanese. I've also met several Dominican baseball players who use interpreters that speak English (albeit with a heavy accent and not perfectly) and understood everything I said.

Do we know what Ippei actually said though? Articles mention that he basically said there was a story coming out and that it was his fault and he had a gambling addiction. Maybe he didn't even mention Ohtani in it. Every media story is very vague about what Ippei conveyed.

But yes, it's definitely possible Ohtani speaks English but isn't fluent. It would require fluency to understand the situation Ippei was talking about.
