This tilts me very hard. John has to move from Winterfell to Danny first then back to the wall than back to KL with the captive (not to mention wandering beyound the wall to catch someone). How long does that take assuming the fastest possible route? Forever...what could other factions in the war do in that time? A lot. Seriously someone math out how long that journey from Jon leaves to ask for dragonglass until dropping off a captive at Cercei would take.
Then as you said it takes the WW forever (seasons!) to march a relatively small distance.
Edit: I risked googling and it's 1k leagues from King's landing to The Wall. That is like 5.6k km (about 3450 miles). There's also these two maps overlaying the US/Europe over GoT land...
