Breaking Bad has best first episode imo. TD season one is possibly the best TV season ever, but that's largely due to MM and Woody. They'll never be topped irt TV acting.

Agree with this. Trying to recreate s1 would be impossible.

Read the grantland review of the first ep (chris ryan?)... it was quite favorable, but he made a point about the show being "self-aware":

Quote:
Based on the small-sample-size theater of one episode, we have witnessed a bit of Skynetification with True Detective — it has become self-aware. For the most part, the actors are performing as if they know they are on True Detective. The lines they speak are written in the cadence, and imbued with the Kierkegaard CliffsNotes wisdom, that we have all come to know (and love to quote out of context) as “True Detective speak.” Vince Vaughn’s Frank Semyon says things like, “This place is based on a codependency of interests,” gesturing with a whiskey glass to what is basically Commerce Casino. Justin Lin’s camera has yet to find its own way of looking at this world, still seeing things through Cary Fukunaga’s stylishly tinted glasses. Overhead shots of freeway exchanges and oil refineries come and go, with none of the haunted impact of the first season. Back then, shots like that were world-building; now they are simply mood-sustaining.
I don't totally buy it, but I also see where he's coming from. Especially the overhead shots. But I'm also a sucker for LANDSCAPE shots so those don't bother me much.

I just finished a rewatch of TD season 1, and actually thought it was better as a whole the second time around. I know a lot of people were let down with the third act/final episode- mostly due to the supernatural ****/fan theories etc. Knowing how it finishes during the second viewing forced my brain to ignore the Carcosa/yellow king stuff, and instead focus on Marty and Rust. By the end it felt more like a complete story and I found the overall journey and resolution more fulfilling.

And Dadarios boobs.

For ****s and giggles yesterday I stopped at the bar where Marty picks up the t-mobile chick knowing I would watch that episode later that night. Did not get propositioned for anal.

A bit of an odd recommendation but to your interest if you like strategy/game based reality tv competitions:

There's a Korean show called The Genius Game where 13 people gather at the beginning. Everyone plays one collective game. The winner gets immunity and the ability to gift out another immunity. The loser goes to a 1v1 and picks his opponent for that match. The next week the remaining 12 start again. The premise itself is awesome enough imo but it has a lot of perks that make it even better.

Pros: Most in-depth strategy game I've ever seen on TV but definitely followable for all itt. Scheming and betrayal happen pretty much every episode. Shows in-game flash forwards as clues to what's happening. Doesn't give you all the answers straight up. Kind of has an atmosphere/format reminiscent of "The Mole" if you watched that. Plenty of eye candy if you're into Korean women.

Cons: Subtitled so reading is required. Maybe a little too much on the goofy Asian TV popup graphics for most American tastes. Each ep is a legit hour long. That's... about all I can think of.

Here's a link to a S1 playlist if that sounds interesting to you. S4 is just about to start this summer so there is good binge watch potential. I've only made it to f4 of Season 1 in my watching but I'm told by a reliable source that Season 2 is even better. I give it a legit 9 of 10 for what it is.

If I taught my friends tactical yutnori, someone would be down a paycheck very, very quickly. That game seems like an amazing gambling game.

At least you didn't receive any 1000-word PMs for recommendations for the next season of the show, sent by someone who consistently gets what he just saw on the screen wrong.

remove screen name and post it ldo

Watched Ep1 again last night with gf and I really dig the TD stlye of story telling. I'm def onboard this being a great season of tv.

I was speaking to disco the other day, I really can't fault them for the ending on S1. While I thought it was LOL and pretty overall bad way to wrap things up, the episodes leading up to it were just incredible. S1E1 is just absolutely phenomenal.

I'm not looking to critique this show as some super perfect Michaelangelian pixel-perfect (blah blah) stupid nittery, it was some goddamn entertaining TV.

If I can find it I'll consider it-- it might be too easy to tell who it is from the posting style. I deleted a ton of PMs recently so it may be gone. (I may however have saved that one for entertainment value.)
