Re: Hannibal

Spoiler:
This overly-contrived **** is getting way out of hand. So Hannibal is just making quicky trips up to MN from VA (not a short drive) to murder people during the Hobbs investigation, whatever. Ok, so people are just randomly showing up in other peoples businesses/homes without anyone knowing...ok. The amount of convenience needed to believe the story was high in S1, it's ****ing off the charts in season 2.

Hannibal has turned into a psychic mastermind. Mistakes that would make logical sense for him to make are avoided purely because Hannibal needs to not get caught yet. Will was sent to prison after being caught holding Lecter at gunpoint and has made a TON of accusations against Lecter, so upon his release, he goes right to Lecters house (where he gets in, no problem) and points a gun at Lecter again...
In what world doesn't Will have a cop tailing him or at least keeping tabs on him? How about Lecter? Regardless of Will's issues, evidence continues to mount that Lecter is a possible candidate. Not just things here or there but solid things giving him means and opportunity. Yet, because Jack doesn't think he's the killer, he refuses to do any real police work?? No tails, no tracking, no nothing? If he took the time to plan a GPS tracker on Hannibal's ****ing Bentley this show would've been four episodes long.

Then, when Jack suddenly realizes it's not Will, he sends two seemingly trained FBI agents to bring in Hannibal and Chilton, yet $.99 Store Astronaut Suit wearing Hannibal overpowers two men with guns because...STORY!!

Then there's the entire issue of whether or not this is a prequel or not. I went into it assuming it was because that's what the press material and interviews suggested it was. If that's the case, the relationships and direction of the show don't mesh with what happened "later" in the movies. Chilton is likely ****ing dead or brain damaged, so it's going to be awful hard for him to get back to running the BHftCI. Even if that isn't the case, how on earth did his previous relationship with Lecter not come up in SotL? (Because it's not a great part of the story)

If it's not a prequel, then why are they overdoing all the homages to the films? Wills speech in the interrogation chamber that mirrors Lecter's from SotL. The Mask. The fact that Chilton's actor played him almost as a copy of Heald's) etc. etc.

Lecter's character was supposed to be incredibly smart, but he's not invincible. We know that because he gets caught twice. Once because of his hubris in letting Will get too close and a second time because of his isolation causing him to fall for Clarice (or run off with her in the books). In this one he's just a magical wizard who's killed more people in Baltimore than all 5 seasons of the Wire and manages to move around freely without ever leaving a trace.

I think Hannibal would have been able to make the Omar season 5 jump without hurting himself at all. Would have made season 5 much more enjoyable.

Greenwald on Louie was very good today.

He tends to bug me with his snarkiness and relentless forced references but his piece today was very thoughtful. I think Grantland finally got it right with one of their reaction to the reaction pieces (aka the entirety of their non-Lowe/Barnwell/Keri ouput). I'm going to assume Greenwald's take was inspired by newfound contempt for his coworkers because I prefer that world.

Except, he can be caught. That's a huge part of the Lecter character. He considers himself so far above everyone that he'll allow the FBI right into his office. Why shouldn't he? He's smarter than they are, he'll stay one step ahead (until, you know, he doesn't and Graham catches him).

Things like:
Spoiler:
The dinner party in S2 actually using real food instead of people. That's another defining portion of his character. He enjoys the thrill of serving his victims up to unknowing guests because it's just another aspect of this life in which he's better than they are.

The build up to Will figuring out what he's doing and the realization that his dinner parties coincide with murder sprees would've made a fine build up to a series finale, but they shot their load too early and had to do some nonsense where Hannibal killed some people, but suddenly dropped his usual routine because...STORY!

Then there's:

Spoiler:
The Miriam Lass stuff. So Hannibal has been using a condemned property for "some time now" and it's never been bulldozed/inspected? Ok fine, a little odd but let's roll with it. Unless he dropped Miriam down that hole with a 2 year supply of canned goods, it's pretty likely he's been making frequent trips back. Really, we know he has because the guy killed in the Tree was kept there. Yet somehow, even in an area where there's snow on the ground, he leaves no trace evidence or record despite the fact he'd been there so often and had to drive there??

Thank God Mads and friends are such incredible actors. It's a little like True Detective in that you notice a plot hole or some lazy writing but are immediately drawn back by Woody or Matt's incredible performance, only here, the plot holes and leaps are just getting to be too many.

Ya, the pilot was very good. It kinda lulled a bit and was just ok for a few episodes imo - but it really hits its stride in the second half of the season.

finally doing my rewatch of the finale. very bizarre, in that every other episode i couldnt WAIT to rewatch. this time around, im just doing it bc im laying around and figured "eh, may as well". just not a good episode. the arya/hound scene was terribad.

I think a lot of people liked the chemistry Arya and the Hound had and that led them to forget it wasn't that they liked each other, it was quite the opposite.
