I don't think GOT is better than The Wire but I could see it age better if it continues to be good. The show looks amazing. Same with Breaking Bad.

I have difficulty engaging anyone who thinks other people only like things to seem cool. It completely neuters any attempt at proper debate over the merits of a show.

i think there's merit to what chilltown's saying, but i also think that same opinion applies to some amount of breaking bad fans too

I just don't see how it's productive to discussion. It's basically saying, "Oh, you say you like that show? I don't believe you." How do you even proceed from that?

Haha, it's amazing how often one sees this opinion on the Internet too. 'Everyone is pretending to like this thing I don't like'. It's the worst aspect of the blanket labeling of anyone who dares enjoy something a little different as a hipster, peacocking his or her love to the other beautiful souls who might also pretend to like it, finally finding social solace with these fakers.

GOT might be the #1 show among 13-18 year old males, I agree with Chilltown there. It all comes down to what you watch television for - if it's mere creation of tension and thus 'entertainment', obviously Breaking Bad and GOT smoke The Wire and all the other great dramas. GOT and BB are fun shows, but there's not much to them - they're very well-plotted and entertaining.

Really? Triumph's opinion on Breaking Bad suggests a rejection of popular consensus. I think you're just suffering from a failure of imagination, that you are unwilling or unable to accept that people like things for different reasons than you do.

When you begin suggesting that A: people only hold the opinions they do because they want to be like everyone else or B: people only hold the opinions they do because they want to be different from everyone else, you're incapable of having a discussion where people give their opinions about things, because you've already decided that opinions are merely things to suggest social standing and not an actual reflection of the speaker's belief. Honestly, I don't see why someone who holds that view would have thousands of posts on a message board, but I guess it doesn't have to make sense to me.

Surely you don't disagree that people claim to enjoy things more than they actually do for social reasons to a certain extent. It's like scientifically proven and stuff. If you mean it is a non-starter in conversations then yes.
