watched first 2 episodes of the new curb and its really bad. had been doing a rewatch of earlier seasons in preparation (on season 5!) and wow the show was brilliant. superfunny.

didn't laugh yet at the 1st 2, will likely keep watching and finish it up out of loyalty but ughhhh

The Uber episode of Nathan For You is a masterpiece.

I noticed a distinct decline in the show around the time he got his IRL divorce (and then incorporated it into the show) and it really shows in the final season. You'll probably be acutely aware of it when you get to that point. But even that was still good LD TV. It ended in a good spot and in hindsight he probably should have just stopped there. It still has good moments but the best years have passed it by. It just feels "forced" if that's the proper way to describe it. I'll be surprised if he does another one.

Curb has definitely been disappointing this season. The only thing that made me laugh last episode was them hammering home how much of a piece of **** Jeff is with his constant cheating.

ya that's a good word for it
it's jarring how super contrived all the plotlines are, when it the past everything just jelled seemlessly
plus lots of random bits that come from nowhere and/or go nowhere

and the beauty of peak Seinfeld/Curb was how relatable everything was
but now he's the "before" idiot in the infomercial who can't get his dick out of his pants
and he's just generally an annoying a-hole now

plus they're repeating tons of stuff
like there was already a Curb ep about getting his dick out when Cheryl was dating the underwear guy
lots of stuff repeating from Seinfeld too (not sheriff intentional or out of material)

and there's almost no laughs in it

i'd rather be watching season 2 of The Brink, there i said it

Curb has always been contrived you guys are lol. Its been funny. Larry is just overacting a bit.

He needs to read jason Alexander's book.

Think Curb is also just seeming less funny bc VP continues to be historically megaelite.

Curb has been beyond elite.

Cant stop laughing at the richard lewis self portrait and then they eat at the restaurant and larry is forced to look at it.

Just beyond goatish.

Curb isn't bad, just not as funny as previous seasons. VP is hilarious, Russell makes that show. Usually not a fan of the actor that plays Russell but he is great in this. Karaoke in the sombrero was golden, and really lost it when he went out for a smoke break with a woman's cigarette.

Anyone caught stranger things yet?

Below deck season good per usual. EJ is a total creep. Bri seems to get hotter by the episode.

I thought season 2 was probably a little better than 1 but it's different enough that I could see opinions varying a good bit

I'm 2 episodes into Stranger Things S2 and it seems like two different shows to me. One of them is this interesting supernatural mystery surrounding the Goonies in a small, midwestern town, and the other is a contest called "Do You Remember That From the 80s?" where filmmakers try to cram nostalgia onscreen the way things are crammed in acronym porn scenes.

A lot of that is knowing and expecting that to be a thing going in now that is has a season under it's belt, as opposed to season 1 where there we no expectations I assume. I get what you're saying but I didn't really notice it until you pointed it out. They both definitely do those two things.

I'm not sure which season after I prefer just finishing with two. I know it's fantastic and I need season 3 asap.

6 eps down of stranger things today. that says enough about my thoughts

Probably should say that I do enjoy the show and will finish it for sure. I hear stories about people doing crazy S like watching 6 episodes in a day and won't be doing that, but I do like it.

EDIT: David Harbour MVP for me so far. The guy was born to play that small town chief role.

EDIT 2: That guy's only a few years older than me? Don't smoke kids.

nico is being a whiny dick even though ej is a very weird dude. not a huge fan of playing up the jen vs work storyline so much. bri is cute but im still waiting for the next julia

I'm just "young" enough where early-mid 80's references won't resonate with me as having been something I experienced as a middle schooler or however old the kids are on the show. That being said, not a whole lot stuck out to me other than the music. And people who in 1984 who were driving their Camaro to school listening to Motley Crue would be in their late 50's now. Or people who rode their bikes as kids to stand alone arcades (and I wonder how much those actually existed) to play Dig Dug would be well into their 40's. So I do think the show definitely traffics in some false nostalgia insofar as I really doubt that's the demographic the show is trying to appeal to.

For instance, the first season featured some very obvious homages to E.T. I was a toddler when that came out, and I'm sure I'm older than the target audience for the show. Yet it "feels" nostalgic even though I certainly didn't watch E.T. until years after when the show is set. I'm not sure how it's even supposed to feel nostalgic for the 25-35 crowd.

Good point about the target audience, I kind of thought about that before as well. Actually what blew my mind was that the creators are 33. Without thinking I'd guess the target audience would be like 35-45, which I'm right in, but I mean I was only 4 or 5 when this was set so I'm not getting rides to the arcade to play games, but I do sure as hell remember the Goonies and loved it. Whatever, I'm being the guy who looks at it too close.

Maybe the weirdest thing about it is how there's no mention of video game systems unless I missed a passing reference somewhere. Atari and Colecovision were out by then and none of them own one? I think that goes to the nostalgia being mostly false and generally referring to things that most people experienced as a child (regardless of time period) rather than being rooted in concrete examples from 1984. Most people watched E.T. as a kid whether they're 25 or 45. But unless you were born in a very specific time you probably don't remember playing an Atari at home in 1984. So E.T. references are written in and video game systems are written out.

alright just finished s2. wait over a year and done in a day. thought it was really good and man casting sean astin is just perfect. I didn't get that "nostalgic reference just for the sake of making one" feel at all. only gripes are that one episode seemed to have zero reason to exist at all and the step brother didn't really add much either

big fan of STEVE aka jean ralphios little brother. gonna get some dominos in honor

I am only two episodes in, but my first thought upon seeing the opening credits "with Sean Astin" was "FFS, I hate that guy". The two episodes seemed fairly slow imo.
