Awhile back I suggested that they simply go AROUND the wall but some lol booktard made fun of me for suggesting the idea. Seriously, are they incapable of building a boat? Build a medium sized one, float somewhere and steal a bigger one, return, keep upgrading until they have a respectable fleet.

But yes, I realize the answer to that is it doesn't work with the plot.

Didn't Osha say in the show that she did take a boat around the wall somewhere?

there are people in the ootv thread seriously arguing that the elevator on the wall was unlikely to function and was an unrealistic aspect of the show, without even a passing mention of the 30ft giants riding on mammoths. I quit.

It's funny because apparently there was no CGI for the elevator at all. It really worked like that irl. The scythe was much more unbelievable, but infinitely more cool. I only watched it once, but it seemed like the thing was the size of the courtyard or bigger. Where do you even build a thing like that?

No the answer is that's a ****ing dumb idea. Raiding with a medium sized boat with a staffed eastern castle with boats better than yours isn't the brightest idea in the world. Martin generally doesn't pull dumb plot tricks like that.

the previous point regarding elevator operation is that elevator technology could be reproduced without electricity, which some people apparently didn't realize. a counterweight slightly lighter than the elevator allows the lift to lower on its own. use of pulleys and levers allow even a child to raise it via a ratcheting system.

The reason they are attacking castle black is because they have one of the 3 gates left on the wall to get the mammoths and animals through, not to mention the people who can't climb a tall as **** wall. Other two gates are guarded with a similar sized force as well.

I think it's been pretty bad. It almost feels like I'm watching something an experienced TV writer who's always hated 24 would write - like as a joke. This past Monday's episode was the worst of the season by far imo. I'm glad I only have to be invested for 12 eps this time around.

It's sorta fitting that Yvonne Strahovski is on the show now since it jumped the shark in a way very similar to Dexter.

24 have been super enjoyable imo, but obv if you probably need to be a fan to really "get" it. It's basically a parody of itself at this point, but watching Jack kick ass with no regard for anything is just fun

probably not really a spoiler but just in case

Spoiler:
afaik the area to the left of castle black is impassable b/c of the terrain, and there's no water it's iced over/weather is too harsh

area to the right has a fort right on the border on the ocean that's presumably well defended and has naval assets that would sink random crap ships made by savages

also, area by castle black has known roads, farms, food, etc. the north is huge, you dont want to plop down in a mountain range with no way out and no food/water.

the elevator gripe is not nittery. i was watching the episode going, "the wildlings are totally crushing. they're gonna kill that kid working the elevator pretty soon and that'll be it for reinforcements." but no, it turns out all he needs to do is throw a lever real quick and then go back to hiding in a corner somewhere. lol?

i mean, if you're gonna allow anything because there's magic and dragons, where does that stop? why does dany need to worry about how many ships she has? can't she just sprinkle fairy pixie dust on her horses to make them run over water?

if you show people in a medieval setting using wood and steel implements, but there just happens to be an infinite energy machine in there, it's kinda hard to ignore.

Just pretend the counterweight is heavier than the elevator, and when it reaches the bottom they take weight off. The lever is a brake. Presto!

infinite energy machines itt.

Good news: Fallen Hero is on your side. Bad news: he roots for the Spurs so can't be trusted.

While we're nitting uncontrollably, one thing that I don't get about these fights is how people automatically know who to attack, particularly in the dark, and particularly when almost everyone involved is pale, fat, and hairy. It's not like they're wearing uniforms. You'd think friendly fire (or friendly stabbing I suppose) would be more of a factor.

lol, I've been watching 24 since s1e1 and loved the first few seasons. There's nothing to "get".

I don't think the show being a caricature of itself is a good thing or something to be hand waved away. And I'd argue it's not even fun anymore in a campy, ridiculous way. imo, it's just boring and lame. To go back to the Dexter example, when that became a parody of itself and totally stupid, most people were rightfully like "ok this sucks". I'm not exactly sure why people react to 24 differently. I get that there's an appeal to seeing Jack just go nuts doing his thing every season, but if you think that's all the show ever was, you're kidding yourself.

I thought the last GoT episode was OK, had some wince-inducing parts but I didn't hate it. My fight scene nittery in GoT is this: what about the guys who get into a fierce one on one fight in the middle of a battle, then get off with just being kicked away? Seems like most of the fights end with a beheading, a massive axe to the chest, or a hammer into the skull, etc, all clearly mortal wounds. But sometimes two guys will spar for a bit, then one guy gets an opening and just kicks the other guy in the torso so he falls over, then the kicker runs off to the next fight. Jackpot IMO for the guy who got kicked. You got into a life or death situation and get off with what, bruised ribs? Pretty lazy move by the kicker too, you got to push your attack and finish him off once he goes down. What are all those spears and knives for, cleaning your teeth muchacho?! Oh, and also, what are all these people using for toilet paper?

I really am looking forward to what they put in this last episode. I'm anticipating some pretty strong opinions flowing afterwards.
