Based on the previews I figured it had to be at least that long. I believe their previous finales have cleared an hour as well. Some of the finales for The Wire finales went much longer than standard eps as well. Lots of characters to advance (or kill) before going into hibernation for nine months.
Nobody seems to have mentioned this, but during the credits only the actors appearing in that episode get billing. This week it led with Kit Harrington (usually he's pretty far down the roll) and there were a total of five actors credited, whereas there are typically probably twenty or so. So it was clear at that point that they weren't leaving The Wall.
Going to go against the grain and give this ep a big meh for me. It was pretty cool visually but I found it repetitive and really the whole 100 : 1 ratio that keeps getting shoved down our throats means that it shouldn't be close even if they have a strong defense and some Tyrion at Blackwater-type shenanigans up their sleeve. Numbers are too overwhelming.
But mostly I don't care if they all got killed. Jon Snow is aight to some degree but I would sacrifice his character if it meant no more time spent dicking around The Wall.
