Okay, so my little nieces and nephews were over and they brought with them the movie "Secretariat". I thought, "why not." It's got Diane Lane in it; a fine piece of @rss if i ever saw one.
I don't care if Disney took some serious liberties with the movie; it was darn entertaining. I really liked it.
I did some study up on this horse afterwards. Wanted to see who its grandpappies and grandmommies were.
I love this freaking horse
Especially after watching John Malkovich and Diane Lane in a pretty good movie.
Princequillo (1940-1964) was a Thoroughbred racehorse conceived in France and born in Ireland. He is known for his performances in long-distance races and his successes as a sire.
His sire, Prince Rose, stood at the Haras de Cheffreville stud farm in France and was mated to the mare Cosquilla. When World War II broke out, the pregnant mare was shipped to Ireland, where she gave birth to Princequillo. Considering the danger from German bombing and the likelihood there would be no racing for some considerable time, Cosquilla's owners shipped her and her colt to the United States.[1

If I remember correctly from the movie Secretariat's daddy(Sire) (Bold Ruler) was a speed horse but faded at distance...... but Secretariat got his long-distance from his grandpappy which would be his momma's side of the family (Secretariat's momma -- SomethingRoyal). This was won in a coin toss with some rich guy diane lane's daddy was friends with.
Secretariat died October 4th 1989

Great horse.... had alot more under the hood than the competition.
From wiki
Quote:
A necropsy revealed his heart was significantly larger than that of an ordinary horse.[17] An extremely large heart is a trait that occasionally occurs in Thoroughbreds, linked to a genetic condition passed down via the dam line, known as the "x-factor".[14][18][19][20] The x-factor can be traced to the historic racehorse Eclipse, which was necropsied after his death in 1789. Because Eclipse's heart appeared to be much larger than other horses, it was weighed, and found to be 14 pounds (6.4 kg), almost twice the normal weight. Eclipse is believed to have passed the trait on via his daughters, and pedigree research verified that Secretariat traces in his dam line to a daughter of Eclipse.[17] In the 20th century, the heart of Phar Lap was weighed and also documented to be 6.35 kilograms (14.0 lb),[21] or essentially the same size as that of Eclipse.
At the time of Secretariat's death, the veterinarian who performed the necropsy, Dr. Thomas Swerczek, head pathologist at the University of Kentucky, did not weigh Secretariat's heart, but stated, "We just stood there in stunned silence. We couldn’t believe it. The heart was perfect. There were no problems with it. It was just this huge engine."[15] Later, Swerczek also performed a necropsy on Sham, which died in 1993. Swerczek did weigh Sham's heart, and it was 18 pounds (8.2 kg). Based on Sham's measurement, and having necropsied both horses, he estimated Secretariat's heart probably weighed 22 pounds (10.0 kg),[17] or about two-and-three-quarters times as large as that of the average horse.
Is there a reason why you are trolling a serious thread?
Lebron is widely considered the least clutch NBA player of all time. Secretariat IS the greatest horse of all time. What makes you think this question even needs to be asked?
I forgot to add the wiki link to the greatest horse who ever lived.... thanks pokerbobo.....
i wanted to see if this horse you mentioned from Wiki who had the double sized heart (Eclipse) was in my Lineage chart and it isn't, but that's because it was born around 1879.
wish I knew what part of the tree Eclipse came from???? anyone know.... i would really like to know.
I was doing research on the horse "SHAM" Secretariat's main competetitor in these races. Sham had a heart the was double in size also but sham got smoked in the Blemont ---- WATCH THE BELMONT RACE SHAM RAN NECK AND NECK RIGHT FROM THE GATE TILL HE COULDN'T TAKE IT ANY LONGER AND GAVE IN.
Sham (April 9, 1970–April 3, 1993), an American thoroughbred race horse, was one of the fastest horses of the 20th century, but was overshadowed by his larger-than-life peer and half-cousin, Secretariat. He was a dark seal brown in color. While racing, he wore green and yellow blinkers. His preferred running style was that of a stalker.
He died of a heart attack on April 3, 1993 at the age 23. At autopsy, his (SHAM) heart was found to weigh 18 pounds, about twice the average Thoroughbred heart. He is buried on the Walmac farm.
it was a great ending to the movie, but i wish they would have stretched it out longer as they played the theme song. they could have used more slow motion shots of the horse's hoofs slamming into the dirt. ...some more flashing photos from the stands....
maybe pan over to diane lane, flash a few memory shots of the colt as it's first standing up trotting in the Meadow Stable's fields (nothing more than 8 seconds or so),,,, but it was over too quick.
just 30 seconds longer would have been enough (catchy upbeat tune)....cause then the movie was over.

McBeef,
it had a tooth abcess when it lost an important race (Wood Memorial??).... other races it lost were against older horses...... it came back to smoke them and set records that still stand today on the racetracks.
from wiki:
....Secretariat was then moved to the turf to defeat his opposition in both the Man O' War Stakes (1 1⁄2 miles) by five lengths Tentam, setting a still-standing track record time of 2:24 4⁄5.

Im not bashing your racing over there, more pointing out just how good both Frankel and Black Caviar are which you seem to be comically dismissing. I think most people within the horse racing world consider them the best in the business right now.
The big difference is that they run on turf rather than dirt which is what the big races in America are ran on (I think).
I don't know much of anything about the sport, only been to 2 horse tracks in my life.... i think one was Arlington Park somewhere in the Western burbs of Chicago.
These days can't they use Ultrasound or X-ray to determine the size of the horse's heart size instead of waiting to do the autopsy?
Frankel and Black Caviar are head and shoulders above the rest.
*Rankings are up to Oct last year, Black Caviar is from down under and has ran a few races since then, winning all of them.
don't know anything about this Black Caviar horse, but I be liking this Frankel but he's a young one (maybe he's not so young---is he 3yrs old??) who runs short races it seems to me from his wiki page.
just looked at wiki page.... these are nothing more than speed horses..... nothing against sprint horses.... great adrenalin rush..... must be fun to watch.... i guess they would smoke secretariat's ass cause he doesn't race in these little puny 1000m and 1200 meter races
for clarification 1200 meters = .745 miles .... 1000 meters = .62 mile

i wanna see what this bad boy's got under the hood -- can he compete for the long haul?
until we see the goods...... he can't carry Secretariat's Jock Strap
EDIT: i see his birthdate ...he's 4 years old (frankel)
They are upping him in trip this upcoming season. I think he going up to a mile and a quarter. The original plan was to retire him after the 2011 season but he's just too damn good to do it. Thankfully his owner Sir Henry Cecil has opted to let him loose in 2012.
Edit:

Frankel's 2012 plans
Sir Henry Cecil, who received his knighthood at Buckingham Palace this week, has outlined likely targets for the world’s best racehorse, Frankel, in the early part of next season.
"Frankel has had a great year and is hugely exciting,” says the master of Warren Place on his website.
“He really has caught the public eye and it was great that he has given an interest to so many people.
"Hopefully he will go on and I hope, by the time of the Eclipse Stakes, he will be ready to tackle a mile and a quarter.
“Personally I think it is a distance he will get well now that he has learnt to settle better and he could be an even better horse at that trip.
"Let's hope he winters well and remains sound. Racing needs champions and let us pray that he can continue where he left off."
His first target of the season is likely to be the JLT Lockinge Stakes over a mile at Newbury on Saturday 19th May.
If he is to wait until the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park on Saturday 7 July to step up to ten furlongs, it must be likely that he will contest the Queen Anne Stakes over a mile which opens Royal Ascot on Tuesday 19 June.
Here are quotes from Cecil from a few months ago regarding the 2012 season for Frankel.

Reason: quote
kevin, since i know nothing about horseracing --only been to the track twice.... i sit in the Vegas (sportsbook/horse race watching area) only for the free drinks.... (only kidding, mostly just watch sports)
In Europe is it mostly turf they run on? How much of it is dirt track? is always just sprint?
Who would win a race between Secretariat and Frankel at mile and 3/8ths?
BTW --- the horse "Frankel" is named after Bethenney of Real Housewives of New York the daughter of the California trainer--- they didn't talk for 15 years or so before he died. She brewed up "Skinny Girl" cocktails and sold it to Jim Beam Inc for like $85 to $110 million dollars.
edit: QUESTION: can you stud these horses such as Black Caviar while they are still racing as 4, 5 and 6 year olds? How about Frankel as a 3 and 4 year old?

So for you horse racing experts how do we measure greatness across the century even going back to the late 1800's -- including some of the horses such as Eclipse year 1775 which is where I am almost positive Secretariat inherited his extra large heart from.
EDIT:The mutation large heart was found in the horse Eclipse at autopsy in 1789. Eclipse's heart weighed 14 lbs.

Where does Man'oWar and SeaBiscuit fit in with all the others including these recent speed demons being mentioned -- Frankel and Black Caviar?
What's the measuring stick? Wins, win loss record? Distance records? Longevity?
