alternatively they figured if they delivered a massive blow, it would help them hold off the US long enough for them to achieve a sort of stalemate (which may have been the case if the Battle of Midway didn't go the way it did)

what they got wrong was how and how effectively the US would respond

easy come easy go
The story I heard on NPR yesterday from some historian was basically that Adm. Yamamoto knew all of this and argued it vehemently to his superiors but was overruled. The decision to attack was at 180 degree odds with what he knew should be done, but he was a loyal military man and followed orders to the letter. Also didn't know before that he was educated at Harvard. Also there is no proof that he ever uttered the "sleeping giant" quote, but it did sum up his feelings on the attack.

Depends on whether the people formerly doing those jobs just become more HOMELESS or we have a solution to keep all the useless people (which will an greater and greater percentage of people over time) happy.

I know, but the question is whether Mr. Hardee/Carl, who will own the automation processes, gonna let the rest of us borrow them for a bit or are they gonna tell us to **** off.

Or if the robots cut out Mr. Hardee/Carl as useless too, then whether they will be benevolent rulers.

Yep, I asked my 13 year old son"Did you talk about Pearl Harbor in school for the 75th anniversary?" No, not even mentioned by any teachers.

even if this true, and on some level i tend to believe it is, a guy who won the presidency campaigning in flyover states 'i will make sure you don't lose your jobs to globalization and automation' just appointed as labor secretary a CEO who is aggressively trying to eliminate jobs to maximize profits. it's literally the exact opposite of what he campaigned on

plus you seem to be assuming automation is inherently altruistic in saving people from ****ty jobs as if there are options for these people who are working them. that's completely wrong. the only thing automation will achieve is widening the wealth gap which is made even worse when you couple that with slashing taxes and no efforts to fix defense spending (for ****s sake congress wants to INCREASE it). unemployment between today and 4 years from now is going to skyrocket

I posted this in another politics thread, but this society utopia from automation will only be achieved if the notion that your job gives you purpose and meaning in life is eliminated

ONLY if there is a corresponding fight against income, and even more importantly wealth, inequality, as inequality is being driven skyward by automation. Right now the US is speeding in exactly the opposite direction.

A year or two from now Chuck Jones is going to have hundreds of members paying dues and making a living wage that would otherwise be bussing tables at Dennys for $11K a year. This little stunt might not mean much in the big picture, but in Chuck's little corner of the universe it's huge. **** him, he should be bending over backwards to kiss Trump's ass. Instead he plays political hack. I'm sure Trump's really unpopular with the membership there Chuck, gl next election.

Chuck Jones needs to just relax and join the Thank You Tour.

Wtf. I just don't understand what so many are afraid of, "We're going to make America Safe Again."

Ya, I'm sure Hezbollah is targeting Des Moines.
