There's really a tiny difference between "free" K12 and what people CDL is arguing against would like to implement. But it sure feels good to pretend like you're philosophical opposites with someone you can paint as AGAINST PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

my desire is to help kids, but let adults fend for themselves unless they are mentally or physically handicapped. If you don't have a handicap and can't feed or house yourself at age 30 then find family, friends, and community solutions to your problems. I think everyone should help the people they care about and those in their community, but we shouldn't do it through the government.

CDL, I don't believe you about who your firm hires. I don't believe you didn't say the things I remember you saying in the past. I don't believe you aren't aware of the advantages you pretend you didn't have. The clubs you belong to almost by default.

We can help kids through the community and not the government.

You can believe what you want. I will tell you that I am not making up random **** though because that simply wouldn't serve any purpose to me. I have no idea what clubs you are mentioning. I am a young, white, American male though so I won't deny that I am lucky in that regard.

I was just thinking maybe you were doing a 1% within NYC or something.

Ok checking 1% is higher than I thought it was $438k in 2013. Never mind.

Sure anyone can become rich. But it's a hell of a lot easier when you're born on 3rd base.

And that's fine. No one on the left is proposing Bolshevism - just levelling the playing field in places where it makes sense - nibble around the edges to redistribute some of the wealth that tends to distribute upward over time - through stuff like min. wage, estate tax, capital gains tax, progressive taxation, massive tax breaks for the working poor, universal healthcare, subsidized higher education.

And to answer the inevitable "Who's gonna pay for it?" - we could fund all that several times over for the $4.4T we spent on the Iraq war. Nobody ever asks who's gonna pay for it when we start on another foreign adventure. Syria is in the on deck circle.

You didn't think I could sneak in another baseball metaphor, but I found a way.
I liked your post as a whole but I feel like it gets asked who will pay for our little foreign adventures all the time

disko, you are a goddamn clown.

I've taught poor kids. Lots of poor kids. Like, sleep on a ****ing dirt floor in a mobile home with no damn foundation poor. Some of them were quite bright. There is no amount of "work hard, get rich" that will work for them. It's just not happening. The deck is so ****ing amazingly stacked against them. First, they've got to overcome not having a damn family that will support them. If they manage to do that, then they have got to get through one of the poorest schools around. Now, if they can make it through to high school, then they very very likely are working a job (or two) to not only support themselves but a multi-member family, because mom is spending the government check on weed from the corner. Thanks to the job, those grades that they are going to need for the next step just aren't there. So, now we've graduated with no real prospects other than working at the local Dollar General store. Certainly a path to wealth, I'm sure.

tl:dr - go **** yourself disko. get off your mother****ing high horse

But please, continue hand-waving and telling everyone that you were once poor, but you walked to work, in the snow, uphill both ways, and now you are rich. I love that story. Warms the cockles of my heart.

I actually agree with this specific post out of context. However, saying that you can't understand what it's like to be poor unless you were/are poor is straight garbage. You don't become an authority on a broad social status because you experienced it anymore than you become an expert on swimming because you dove in a pool once. You seem to realize this in this post, but yet grant yourself authority because of a prior experience.

Feel free to use your experience to make an argument, but using it as a crutch to hand wave away all other arguments when you'll dismiss someone who disagrees with you who has that same experience is just straight dishonest.
