I know this is a tit-for-tat response, but do you actually know this (that he just chose not to show up because he didn’t care)? I haven’t found why he missed the vote. Seems weird to jump to that conclusion based on his history on this issue, and he certainly doesn’t seem to miss key votes very often. A suspiciously convenient assumption.

I mean, he wasn't hospitalized as far as I have heard. He isn't campaigning for president. Ted Kennedy managed to cast votes while near death, so I am not sure why Bernie could not make the effort on something important.
