I will make a SERIOUS POST here since you seem to be looking for DISCUSSION.

American politicians -- who are of course NRA-funded and gun lobby funded
all the time. What are the HARD NUMBERS on the amount of influence here. I did a bit of research aka googling to find a website with a trustworthy layout and numbers and found this.

http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/index.php

Claiming $3.24 billion total in lobbying for 2014.

Looking at the amount spent by industry, GUN RIGHTS aren't even in the top 20.

http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/top...14&indexType=i

In fact, you have to go into the alphabetical list of industries and they are hidden in the "single-issue" bucket here

http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/ind...id=Q&year=2014

where they data shows a mere $12 million spent.

The page for the NRA looks to confirm those numbers.

https://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/sum...&id=D000000082

We are talking roughly a third of a percent of the money. How does such a relative drop in the bucket get so much influence? Is there something completely wrong with those numbers?

Mitt Romney should have been an excellent US Presidential candidate. He has rational economic policies without being a lunatic on social issues (originally). Very smart economically, liberal enough socially to be Gov of an uber-liberal state. but he had to change course and cater to the moonbat faction of the GOP, which is unfortunately a large portion of the GOP and call himself SEVERELY CONSERVATIVE.

all of this sucks bc each party demands all of it's candidates fall in line and nobody can end up in the middle. so now we need to essentially choose the lesser of all moonbats on either side.

politics sucks

What makes the NRA so influential?

Focus and emotion. Groups with large constituencies often address a wide variety of issues. The AARP, for example, attempts to influence such diverse issues as Social Security, health care, energy, and ballot access laws. The NRA focuses almost exclusively on gun control, which enables its leaders to doggedly pursue their legislative ends. Perhaps more important, many NRA members are as single-minded as the organization itself. Polls often show that more Americans favor tightening gun control laws than relaxing them, but gun rights advocates are much more likely to be single-issue voters than those on the other side of the question. As a result, the NRA can reliably deliver votes. Politicians also fear the activism of NRA members. They’re widely believed to be more likely to attend campaign events, ring doorbells, and make phone calls to help their favored candidates—or defeat their opponents—than senior citizens, members of labor unions, or public school teachers.
...
The NRA also has a better ground game than many other lobbying organizations. The group relies on scores of independent gun magazines, thousands of gun shops, and gun clubs across the country to help spread its message well beyond its membership.

Romney would get his ass handed to him. You massively overrate optics. Having nice hair doesnt matter if you adopt moronic policy. Time to start giving American public more credit imo. Romney and McCain both should have been able to win but they both sold out to the truly idiotic Republican ideas and proved that America wouldn't tolerate it.

I actually think Romney wouldn't be a terrible president but his performance in that campaign was despicable.

He ran against a historically elite orator who ran a cutting-edge get out the vote campaign. Those two things may well have been the difference as opposed to policy.

I have less faith in Americans than you do but that may be mostly because I am too keenly aware of the lolvariance associated with the lolelectoralcollege and the 6-8 states that elect our president. All you have to do is go back to Bush/Gore to see it play out.
