I wonder if there’s a correlation between when candidates start paying lip service to popular ideas and the likelihood that they are going to do what it takes to implement them while in office.

A lot of the things we're talking about now are going to be moot points in 12 months because the path to get through the primaries is going to push all the survivors pretty far left on the big stuff (Healthcare, income inequality, climate change).
That's fine, my point is that I want someone who is clearly playing in bad faith with a wink/nod to the base. They can say single payer as a human right in the primaries. In the general, the candidate should counter claims of being a socialist (read: murdering communist dictator) with very bold statements like "I am the most pro-capitalist person to ever run for president" and "You're the socialist."

Hillary was deemed to be by far the most "electable". That was obviously wrong in hindsight - but the DNC didn't engineer her to win the primary because they thought she would lose the general. What she was not - was the most inspirational.

To me the lesson is don't even think about electability. Just support the candidate that lights your fire and let the chips fall where they may. It worked for Trump fans. If Warren doesn't move the needle for you then fine, support someone else.

To me she's the best candidate, so I'm going to push hard for her until she's out of the running. All the other stuff is just noise.

Quote:
The price of his insulin had apparently gone up again to $1300 (for a month), which was more than he had in his bank account. Perhaps he felt embarrassed, too proud to borrow money so soon after finally moving out of his parents’ place. Perhaps he didn’t want anyone to worry about him, and figured he could keep his blood sugar down until payday.

So he left. He never told his mother and he never told his girlfriend. Five days later, he was dead.

Since her son’s death, Nicole Smith-Holt told me, she’s met five or six other parents who lost diabetic children at age 26, after they’d become uninsured. Other people she met were fortunate enough to get the drugs they needed, but still described how dramatically ever-rising insulin costs impacted their lives. “You know, I’ve heard of people having to sell all their possessions or relocate where rent is more affordable,” Smith-Holt recounted. “I’ve heard of people staying at jobs they don’t want just to have insurance coverage. I’ve heard of people dropping out of college, I’ve heard of people cashing in their retirement just to keep their spouse or child alive … I’ve heard of people my age having to move in with their children because they can’t afford to live independently with the rising cost of insulin. I’ve heard of people reaching out through the black market and buying questionable products in dark alleys.”

It's something we almost never saw until maybe 5 years ago - diabetics w/o insulin - and in most of those cases it was in diabetic psych patients, who had an understandable reason for being off it. But I'll see a patient every few weeks with bad foot infections or total kidney failure, who stopped the insulin for $$ reasons.

Another example of how stupid this stuff is, too. Having someone go on dialysis costs just shy of $100K - which medicare (meaning you and I) pay for. Same amount for the foot amputation/post op care, give or take a few thousand. Just insane.
The next time someone asks "But how are we going to pay for it?" - tell them we already do pay for it - just in the most inefficient, arbitrary, corporate-profit-subsidizing way possible.

I literally can't read any more stories about insulin price gouging or kids in cages because they make me want to beat my head into a wall.

The US is just such an embarassment on so many levels. The fact that the 2020 election will probably be pretty close makes my head hurt even more.

What's most frustrating is that E. Warren has so many great, well-thought out policy proposals that are being generated by some of the most intelligent people in the country, and she will lose over a stupid nickname.

As the lone conservative in this group, I am 100% behind Liz Warren. I think forgiving the student loan debt is a great step in the right direction to close the wealth gap, and I think that one policy alone is enough to get her to win in a landslide.

On the phony scale nobody will care bout the phony injun thing as much as they did about always having a fake smile painted on and telling black people that she never leaves home without hot sauce in her bag.

Again, I'm really confused by this thread's love for Warren while quoting Bernie's policy positions.

"I love Medicare for All, that's why I'm for Liz!"

-Liz is for a public option alongside a private one. Bernie is for M4A

"I think forgiving the student loan debt is a great step in the right direction to close the wealth gap"

-Liz is for forgiving up to $50,000 of student loan debt to families making under ~$100k/yr. Bernie is for forgiving it all.

I like them both, and either one is a great option, but it's strange how much their positions seem to get conflated.

I think everyone here realizes how similar they are. But Bernie is old and crazy.

They're similar overall, and like I said, they're both probably the best options of the field, but Bernie has what should be objectively (to liberals) better plans.

M4A is just a better plan than enhanced ACA, even though both would be better than this **** show we have now. Paying off all student debt is better than paying off some, even though both are better than allowing a tidal wave of debt to crush an entire generation.

If you want to make the el*$#@bi!ity argument, then go ahead. Lord knows nothing gives me a bigger boner, but I'm just saying, it's strange that people say "I want someone who's far left on healthcare!!!" or "I want my student loans erased!!" and then opts for Liz over Bernie.
