What qualifies someone as transgender? They all wear the same uniform. The box they check on the application?

Someone being transgender depends upon their gender identity, which is something that has no physical characteristics, as far as I know. So, someone is transgender if they say they are transgender and we should generally take them at their word.

They're gonna be screwed when the entire armed forces identify as trans in solidarity and the military ceases to exist.

Impact would be much more significant domestically than internationally imo. That’s a lot of eliminated jobs.

Sure there would be different jobs created by redeployment of the money elsewhere but let’s not pretend the labor is perfectly fungible and that there wouldn’t be massive dislocation

It depends how the cuts are made/how whatever new spending is structured. I think that way of looking at it is a bit narrow as well, jerbs are not the only thing considering the externalities of deploying labor in a way that doesn’t result in the production of things that cause economic harm or sit rusting in abandoned airfields.

Did an AMA in NVG to promote biography, got asked about debt rumors, claimed to pay all debts and not owe anyone, Cole South comes in and provides evidence to the contrary, Eli tries to sweep under the rug, and everyone lols and shames him. He has obviously abandoned the AMA and the book will blow up in 2p2's face.

The new Fox News poll asks a good question: How many pay checks could you miss before you wouldn't be able to pay your bills? Over half (54%) say it would take two missed paychecks or less to put them into debt.

That's Friday for federal employees.

Wrong. DS took the heat on that call.

MM undeleted it and wrote a reasonably decent mea culpa this afternoon.

The whole thing was worth it for this:

Quote:
It’s a chilly January night in Las Vegas, January 2010. A tired, drunk Ei Elezra flips over his cards, raps the table and says “nice hand.” He stands and walks away from the 4-8 table.

From his perch in the high-limit area, Cole South watches the bedraggled figure drag his weary body from the room. “Jackpot” he thinks, twirling his mustache.

“Leaving so soon, buddy?” Eli turns his attention way from the row of nickel slots where he was hoping to find a few forgotten credits. He pauses for a moment; surely this famous and skilled player can’t be talking to him, could he?

“It’s a hot night in there, pal. Lots of fish ready for a couple of sharks like us. In fact, a seat just opened up in the 400-800 game with your name on it...”

“But Mr. South,” said the man, adjusting his broken glasses. “This must be some kind of a joke. I’m just a poor, completely broke player who is well aware of my limitations who would never try to exaggerate either my wealth or skill level, and who can’t afford to lose even one cent more and will never play poker again.”

At that moment, eight of Eli’s children rushed into the casino and grabbed ahold of his legs. Their filthy rags looked even dingier in the bright lights of the casino. “Father,” the littlest one cried, “please come home. We have run out of coal and we are freezing.”

“Nonsense!” cackled the grinning Cole, reaching into his alligator-skin satchel and thrusting $100,000 into the stunned Eli’s hands. “You will take this money and join us in the high-limit room!”

“But I’m warning you, Eli. Unless you pay back this money, interest free, after some unspecified length of time...” The casino lights flickered and dimmed as the two walked back into the poker room. “I will occasionally send you text messages about it and then after nine years let the general public know.”

Cole then disappeared in a puff of smoke. The scent of sulphur lingered in the air.

Career security specialists rejected Kushner for top secret clearance but were overruled
...

Quote:
Daniel Jacobson @Dan_F_Jacobson

1/ Having worked on security clearance issues at the White House, this story is terrifying. It is not normal for the head of the Personal Security Office to ever overrule the career employees who adjudicate clearances. This says it's happened 30 times in the last 1.5 years!

2/ It takes some pretty bad stuff to be denied a clearance. The fact that there have been thirty denial recommendations of WH staff in the last 1.5 years is itself crazy, before you even get to the overruling part.

3/ Now let's talk about Kushner. That multiple career officials recommended denying his clearance is damning. They would not do that lightly for someone of Kushner's stature and position.

4/ The fact that the CIA then denied his SCI application is equally damning. Again, they would not do that lightly. And the fact that they were so disturbed by the granting of his TS clearance that they called over to the WH? Hooboy.

5/Practically, this means that when Kushner attends classified meetings, there are some things the other people can't tell him. Or they may have to ask him to leave because they need to discuss SCI stuff. i've seen this happen for people whose SCI is pending, it's super awkward.

6/The story also says that the head of the Personal Security Office decided to stop running credit checks on clearance applicants. The reason he apparently gave - because of the Equifax breach - is so nonsensical it suggests this is something that was catching issues w/WH staff

7/ Finally, I worked with the career employee who the story says filed a complaint against the head of PSO. I have no inside info and haven't spoken with her since leaving the WH, but can attest that she is an honest, hardworking public servant who is serious about security.
translation: Kushlash owes money all over town, including to know pornographers, and as such has probably been working for them to pay it off

and i mean, he seems like Trump's point man on a lot of his international wheeling & dealing, but the fact that Kush himself is compromised is pretty funny/sad/whatever

would be surprised if Mueller doesn't have all of this already, hopefully it ends up mattering

anyway, your country has probably been sold to foreign powers many times over, good times

There's no way Mueller is anything but antagonistic towards Trump. You're too used to Congressional Republicans who are all cowards because they only care about their own re-election. Republican lawyers are overwhelmingly NeverTrumpers, which is why Trump has to hire frauds and scumbags like Cobb and Giuliani. The idea that a guy like Mueller is well-disposed towards a draft-dodging serial liar is absurd, and unlike Congressmen he has no incentive to play ball.

This is the Washington Examiner, 16 Jan, recycling a Vanity Fair report (which is paywalled):

Quote:
Giuliani is now saying privately that he expects Mueller’s report to be “horrific” for Trump.

“[He’s] very worried about the report,” a source told Vanity Fair.

Giuliani has been a staunch defender of the president, promising to release a counter-report to Mueller’s findings.

"Damn right, there will be a Giuliani report. Our report will be the definitive report, because it will be the truth. The president did nothing wrong," he told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in early January.
Giuliani is so sure that the Mueller report will be bad that he has given up being a lawyer and is organizing a PR effort instead.

Don't get me wrong, the report probably won't matter. By the time it gets released, those still approving of Trump will consist of 100% drooling MAGA chuds. The idea that Mueller is going to carry any water for Trump is way off the mark though.
