Your right...i got triggered lol.

Wanted to post this link as i thought this was interesting enough considering the.make up of the current Supreme Court.

On the one hand does the owner have a right to use his bible as a shield to claim he's not a bigot while claiming that baking wedding cakes are unique works of art that should not be forced against his will based.on his religous beliefs..or does the gay couple have the right to claim bigotry because Religon isnt fact its faith based and since creating wedding cakes are for consumption they should be viewed as a product/service to which any denial of said service because of their sexual orientation should be treated as a discriminatory act....

The ACLU has been putting out some good pieces on this. I'll see if I can find one, but bottom line, I don't think the cake shop has a case here. They aren't merely refusing to craft a particular cake with a particular message. They are refusing to sell any cake of any kind, even routine, generic designs, to any gay couple. There was a related case where a baker didn't want to write a particular message, but she still baked a stock cake and gave the buyer a piping bag of frosting to write it himself, which seems to be a fair outcome if a baker has an objection to a particular message rather than wanting to refuse service of any sort to a whole class of people.

Agree with being able to purchase a generic cake but not entitled to a custom cake.

the cake store is gonna win. theres no doubt about that.

but it was certainly pleasant to learn that they have lost over 40% of their business according to npr.

That's exactly how it should be. Refuse service to anyone you want but pay the price from the free market.

This seems like the ideal outcome. Uphold the right to refuse service (in a 100% discretionary consumer business) and let the market punish them for being bigots. The danger is that people will be harmed when they're denied services that aren't 100% discretionary.

Businesses don't have to appeal to everyone to stay in business. Being bigoted can be a key differentiator for you and drive the business of likeminded bigots your way, c.f.:

there are material realities (that we have historically observed, such as your example) in which bias / discrimination is so widespread that it effectively rises to the level of a complete bar. particularly for services that are vital (housing, hotels, transportation, utilities, etc), that is unacceptable.

i dont think the material realities of this case rise to that level (non-vital services, i'm sure there's another way to get a cake).

on a more general note, you may perhaps be spending too much of your time conversing with people who are plainly in bad faith, and it may be healthy to spend some time in good faith conversations.

It amazes me that people sue over stuff like this. Not that the suit is meritless, just that people would follow through on it all the way to the Supreme Court.

Why should we not fight for the rights of people to not be discriminated against just for who they are?

We should. But how many times have you wanted to sue someone and REALLY meant it and then got home and poured yourself a Scotch and said **** it? These people really took it all the way. I can't imagine the time and expense and heartache that went into it. Pretty incredible really.

Pretty sure half of all Supreme Court cases are started by Jehovah's Witnesses. Or their god will punish them.

I'd like to suggest an ad idea for the senate race:

Soft on Crime

"As a prosecutor, Doug Jones was so soft on crime he didn't even arrest Roy Moore."

For many pedophiles, it’s impossible to make ends meet. These sex criminals are often shunned both socially and professionally, making it extremely difficult for them to find any sort of gainful employment. But now a group called the GOP is trying to change all that: This amazing organization helps disgraced pedophiles rebuild their lives by getting them elected to political office.

If that doesn’t lift your spirits, we don’t know what will.

While most Americans are openly disgusted by pedophiles, the bighearted people over at the GOP seek to help them find decent, well-paying jobs where they can shape national policy. You only need to look at the amazing work the GOP is doing with pedophile Roy Moore in the special U.S. Senate election in Alabama to know that this organization is looking out for the people society tries to put in the margins.

“Men like Roy Moore are left without many options for getting back on their feet,” said Paul Ryan, one of the senior leaders over at the GOP. “A lot of people want nothing to do with him just because he routinely preyed on teenage girls at shopping malls and other public places, but at the GOP, we believe he deserves the basic dignity of being elected to an incredibly powerful national office.”

“The smiles on pedophiles’ faces when they’re elected with the help of our financial resources, public relations know-how, and endorsements are one of my greatest joys,” added Ryan.

The GOP also offers one-on-one mentorship and the legitimacy a candidate needs to make it to Capitol Hill, all at no cost to the pedophile. With the GOP behind them, pedophiles have a strong chance at becoming representatives, senators, and even speaker of the House, as was the case with noted pedophile Dennis Hastert, who served in Congress for over 20 years.

The GOP’s boundless support of pedophiles’ campaigns seems like it should be impossible to sustain, but the fact that it somehow has done so day in and day out is truly amazing. So thank you, GOP, for the empathy and compassion you show these pedophiles. Keep up the great work!
