Anyone have any irl experience with activist groups (I've been to one protest with ~100ish people but never anything sit down like this? I guess David Gill (who's running for Congress here) is slated to speak but all I know. Am I now officially an Antifa terrorist? Tia.
it really depends on the group. its easy for certain groups to get overrun with whackos or led by them which is even worse. i haven't been to any local DSA meeting yet although i have considered it. recently i have been to a few rallies that have been great until the nutjobs have shown up with bandanas around their faces and huge flags with the communist sickle and hammer on them. it is just so dumb and hurts our cause when we are there protesting for DREAMERs and then these idiots come and alienate everyone who drives by and tons of left of center people at the rallies.
i have been to a couple of the indivisible events and they are generally well run and have gotten a lot more things accomplished in my area with other organizations like planned parenthood, etc than DSA has but of course these events cater to a different older and wealthier crowd. i would just go and meet people usually everyone friendly. the leftist infighting is 99% on the internet. the DSA still such a fringe group that i'm sure they will be very welcoming to newcomers and hopefully you guys have a good meeting. from my experience most of the grassroots organizers of these things are very young, very liberal, and very friendly
definitely go if you can make it. i regret not at least trying a DSA meeting thusfar and will go myself in a while. i am hoping the really offputting parts of the far left are stuck on the internet.
