Like if Kid Rock eschewed all traditional campaign activities and instead ran for the Senate in MI with a concert tour throughout the state where all he did was perform his standard show full of ****ty songs and at the end yelled "Vote for me and keep drinking these!" and slammed a Bud, I'd respect that more than Zuck's phony, toilet PR campaign.

If Trump taught us anything, isn't it that the army of parasitic advisors/pollers/media buyers/etc. are completely useless? Listening to them turns you into John Kerry or Hillary Clinton.

There's something to be said about doing fake bs volunteer work and using that as an inlet to developing an interest in that kind of thing. Not that it makes it any more noble, but that sort of exposure could be useful towards developing a real interest, even if the initial reasons are patently fake. Maybe a good PR move while also a path to something more genuine?

Trying to be optimistic

Has anyone ever started a presidential campaign when they were too young to run for president? We may have a first here.

Dinner tour of US states to show common person connections and caring? Check. It reminds me of people in high school fluffing out their college admissions with total bull**** fake volunteer work and clubs simply to list on forms.
On the upside, maybe they will make him join the army.

Lighten up and throw another shrimp on the Barbary. Dude won 304 electoral votes, and remember that everybody was saying there was no path to 270, no republican could do it that was all you heard, it was a great victory and winning the popular vote would have been much easier so Trump can say what he wants about Chokin' Norman.

You're not gonna get a full-throated legal defense of AA out of me because it takes too long and is too complicated and it is NOT, unlike most of the stuff I rant about, an airtight, locked and loaded unassailable legal argument.

That doesn't mean that I don't like AA - I do, I think it's an unmitigated good and that arguments against it have been uniformly sophistic attacks that presuppose harms that are not empirically, statistically, or logically either demonstrated or even implied.

Unfortunately, the acrobatics that were necessary to enshrine AA as legally permissible - and that is the question at issue, and it is a different question from whether AA is good - were more extreme than usual, and whatever the motivations of its opponents, their arguments are not always the total garbage I've come to expect from social conservatives (even though their motivations plainly are such garbage).

I also haven't had time to come up for air in about 4 days, and that conversation seems to have passed.

Like, for example, the legal arguments we made in favor of gay marriage in California were obvious on plain readings of law. They could only fail if courts just didn't care about the law and wanted to tie themselves in impossible knots just to enshrine bigotry in law.

I don't think you'll find anyone who will say the same thing about the arguments in favor of the legality of AA.

I do think you'll find lots of people, including me, who will say the same thing about prevention of racism in admissions, though.

Hoya, AA is not an unmitigated disaster (social mobility is a good thing imo), but any quota based upon an attribute not related to job performance has potential for, if not necessitating, deleterious economic effects on the employer.

By refusing to recognize any validity in its opponents' positions, you constrain the ability to negotiate a compromise.

By rising to Greg Norman bait, one enables Trump to shrug off his recent comments on abusing suspects in custody (to an audience of applauding law enforcement officers) as "you guys can't take a joke".

You cannot say that he's refusing the validity in the other side because people will run with that. He can't negotiate under those circumatances.
