OJ had it all: HOF career, incredible amount of fame, still somewhat relevant at the time of the crime because of his acting career. Add to it one of most heinous crimes possible.
I don't know if people realize just how well known OJ was. This was the equivalent of Peyton Manning going off and killing his ex-wife and her suspected lover in about 10 years.
I think he's by far the best player (HOF'er in a major sport at a glamour position plus he was very popular off the field...pretty hard to top) to be caught for such serious crimes. I think many athletes have been better (or worse, however you want to look at it) criminals. Basically you've got a crime of passion and then some bumbling. There have been guys I consider much more hard core, maniacal, and frankly just good criminals. OJ loses to them on those counts. Over-all it's how you judge it and I'm not saying a bad #1 but depending on how much you emphasize what there are other guys I like a whole lot.
I mean OJ killed his ex-wife and some dude connected to her and tried to stick up some dude who owed him some scratch. He bumbled through both crimes (though he does get bonus points for still getting away with the murders). He wasn't some menace to society, he was a moron who made some really bad choices in some obvious/almost cliche ways. He wasn't a criminal mastermind. He wasn't a guy who'd slit your throat for a dime or just for the giggles. To me just saying murder is the most serious crime is over-stating it I don't consider him either a great or a monstrous criminal, relatively speaking of course.
