Roach on Mayweather in
July 23-24 Interview
Quote:
The key to beating Mayweather is literally beat him up. You take what you can get. He is elusive but he can’t move his body. He is very quick with head movement. You break his body down, he has bad hands, bad ribs, bad knee and he’s had rotator cuff surgery. This is not a guess it’s the facts, period.
Mayweather relies on his elusive defense as a platform from which to work a meticulous offense consisting of quick bursts combined with exploitive counterpunches. His defense has never had to withstand the kind of relentless innovative all angles power attack which Pacquiao will launch. Not only is Pacquiao brilliant finding ad hoc openings in the ring, he is a good student outside the ring. Unlike De La Hoya, Pacquiao will bring the tools of speed, power, stamina, and execution to turn the keys Roach hands him in training camp for unlocking the Mayweather defense.
Mayweather will get in his share of punches early but with no more power nor effectiveness than Coto did. As the fight wears on and Pacquiao wears down his defense, the sparcity of Mayweather's offense will be exposed for the weakness it is. Mayweather is constitutionally incapable of launching the kind of lightning counterpunch-all out counter offensive which proved so troublesome for Pacquiao when he fought Marquez at lightweight.
