Caught up on some of the weekend's action. I need to watch Bundrage and FNF and Jennings still. Any of those not worth watching?

Thoughts:

Peterson - Inserted himself into the front of the line to fight Danny Garcia if Garcia decides to stay at 140lbs for 2 more fights. I think he's fighting a scrub first, but if he sticks around, does he have a better option than Peterson at 140? (Yes, I want Matthyse II, but I doubt he takes that fight from a business perspective).

Jean - Looked fairly good in his loss. Might be able to grab a belt in the next year or two if Peterson and Garcia leave for 147 an he keeps fighting well. I don't see this guy as being elite or a top belt holder though.

Huck - Really good adjustments. He was throwing too many straight shots early on in that fight, Arslan was blocking, coming inside and hitting him with some decent power shots. But then Huck started throwing uppercuts and roundhouses and really timing Arslan with power shots and Arslan just could not overcome. Wish this guy would fight Hernandez and not have silly dreams of fighting Klitchko at HW (though I'll watch it).

Arslan - He made for game competition, but he didn't do anything other than the ole Murray strategy vs Martinez the entire fight (cover up, get close, throw power shots once in awhile). And he was televising his non punching spots too often and too close to Huck that Huck just started tearing power shots into Arslan with no retribution after a few rounds. Arslan kept up his gloves and it cost him. At 43, not sure where he goes from here, but 190 is a weak division.

Rosado - I don't think the eye was a factor at all. He just got outboxed all night. He looked slow. This was the only fight I bet on, I put a small bet on Rosado as the underdog but he looked bad. Figured he'd be a powerful guy at 154 and he gave such a good performance in his last fight (and he survived a little while vs GGG)... but he did bad. Time to fight some scrubs for the rest of 2014, bounce back for 2015. He's still young (though talent is questionable for high level success).

Charlo - He did really well. His movement both with his legs and with his head were really good. He blocked a lot of punches with those two skillsets, along with hand speed. I could see this guy having a chance to beat anyone outside Lara and Canelo if he keeps improving at JMW.

Stevens - Haha, this was fun. My second favorite fight (Huck Arslan being #1) of the weekend so far. Spoiler! "Jab, he's down, gets up, boom, he's down, gets up, boom, he's down, fight over." Solid 45 seconds of boxing. The crowd looked like some tiny rowdy strip clubesque boxing venue. Good stuff. I have Stevens ranked just outside of the Macklin, Barker (retired, for now), Geale, Murray type guys at 160lbs (those guys are like 4-8 type rankings probably). I think Stevens has a shot at being a top 10 fighter at this level. We'll see. He has some nasty power. He's likely prone to being outboxed all night by the right guy, but he could also knock anyone out at almost any time. Hope to see more of him (and vs some better fighters).

Mike Garcia - He always seems to come out doing a poor job of timing his opponents. He wasn't doing too well early on, treading water/trading shots, mostly fighting defensive (not getting hit a ton but not hitting his guy a ton either). Then he started to cruise in round 3. By round 5 or 6 you could tell it was over. He tried to press Burgos a bit at times (unlike Rigondeaux vs his even tighter of a shell opponent), but Burgos wasn't cooperating. Garcia has way more power than Rigondeaux too, people shouldn't bitch about one or the other recently, their opponents made the fights as "boring" as they were.

Burgos - Wasn't really impressive. Once Garcia got his timing down, Burgos stopped throwing a lot and it was all done. One of the announcers said something about how Garcia does everything Burgos does, except better. That seemed like an accurate observation.

So Victor Ortiz has essentially retired from boxing at this point, right?

Never seemed to have his heart in it imo. Watching him quit mid-round in the Maidana fight and then be all hugs and smiles afterwards doesn't come off as being a fighter to me.

lol I didn't realize gary russell jr was fighting tonight

good god he is a complete embarassment to the sport with all these ****in scrubs he has been fighting for the last few years. has seemingly world class talent and won't fight anyone it is so pathetic

fight before main event is decent with two undefeated prospects although tbf i haven't heard of either

pretty fun card. collazo isn't great but he is an okay journeyman and you never know what the hell ortiz will do. plus it's in collazo's hometown of brooklyn

man that was hilarious

but goddamn what a sad fight for ortiz. all the naysayers were indeed correct, he is completely done. i hate those types of narratives but you can't ignore all these fights where it looks like his heart is not in it at all once he gets hit in the mouth. sad to see as he was always in action fights

gotta feel great for collazo as he has been on the wrong end of some questionable decisions (hatton/berto) in his career. but i don't think he is someone i am all that interested in watching. hope i'm wrong! I have a bit of a bias for ortiz cuz garden city is relatively close to KC

Aside from the Andre Berto fight, Ortiz never showed the heart required to be an elite boxer. Having no defense doesn't help much either.

Seems that a rematch with Berto is really his only decent payday left assuming he doesn't follow through on claims to retire.

Like in all sports, sometimes people stay in love with talent for far too long. Ortiz is a good example of that. Berto is another one. Amir Khan I think is another possible example.

It's like, if you're young and get to 140-147 with fast hands, everyone starts saying "Floyd successor/destroyer" before guys can even beat a top 10 fighter at the level.

One of the more unusual funerals:

Quote:
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Even in death, Christopher Rivera Amaro almost looked ready to box, leaning against the corner of a simulated ring.

Mourners who came to his wake in San Juan on Friday found him posed afoot, a yellow hood on his head, sunglasses glasses over his eyes and blue boxing gloves on his hands.

Elsie Rodriguez, vice president of the Marin Funeral Home, said Rivera's family wanted to stress his boxing. The funeral home suggested posing him in a ring.

The makeshift ring was set up in a community center of a public housing complex. Rodriguez told The Associated Press it took them several hours to create the scene.

The funeral home has staged similar wakes for others. One featured a deceased man riding his motorcycle.

The 23-year-old Rivera had a 5-15 record in the 130-pound weight class. Police said he was shot dead Sunday in the city of Santurce. No one has been arrested.

It looks like some of the int'l broadcasts at noon EST, no real idea of what undercard fights are to be televised.

Adama fighting smart. At least he's not laying down. He's moving around, throwing punches. Not too effectively, but he's game.
