1. Too many weight classes/champions. We looked on the ring magazines web site and there were about 70 world champions. Boxing needs 1 govering body, cut to 10 weight classes with 10 champions. I have no idea how this would happen.
2. Lack of great American heavyweights. Until about 2000 America dominated the heavyweight division and boxing was popular. If the Klitschkos were 2 white American brothers who took over the heavyweight division for ten years they would be hugely popular, but they are eastern Europeans so no one cares how many challengers they destroy. Their fights being overseas as opposed to LV doesn't help either
3. The best American athletes just don't go into boxing anymore.
4. Mayweather is a dbag that no one likes and he's the only marketable American star.
5. Bad decisions by judges.
Thoughts?
6. Not enough media exposure for top boxers in the sport. The UFC wasn't as popular until they released 'The Ultimate Fighter' TV show which was used as a medium to introduce their up and coming talent. The first season of 'The Ultimate Fighter' was a huge success, and the season finale had millions of viewers as well as a 1.9 rating. The UFC imitated the marketing strategy of the WWE, and that launched them into the mainstream. This will be harder to achieve for the sport of boxing because it is much more traditional, and the fact that there are multiple governing bodies that can never agree to anything, doesn't help at all.
