So there's NO benefit to getting a knockdown in Olympic boxing

My favorite part was the guy getting up on the count of 2 and the ref stopping the fight with 0:00 left.

Seriously, knocking a guy down counts the same as landing a jab? There's no benefit whatsoever?

I always thought that a knockdown was viewed in the same way a standing 8 count was.

Kinda random, but I was thinking of the who the most entertaining boxers of all time are. I made a list and out of everyone on there I picked Prince Naseem Hamed by a wide margin. IMO, he was a show within a show and probably the hardest hitting feather weight I've ever seen.

Who do you guys think?

I must admit buying Prince Naseems Greatest Hit Boxing Video on VHS

He was defo entertaining but his ego was too big and once he had his only loss his career was over

I remember going to his comeback fight after the defeat and he was booed by his own fans who were singing 'Are you Bruno in Disguise?' and he never fought again

Im no big fan of Hamed to be honest.

Showed none of his opponents any respect at all and just basically thought the sun shined out of his you know what.

If you really want to laugh ... watch the Barrera pre fight documentary and listen to Hamed saying hes going to do this and that .

Its good to watch knowing he got shown up in the fight.

Not surprised he only fought once again ... typical bully type ... all aggression until someone hits back.

I can see that side of it. To his credit he never dodged anyone (even though the featherweight division wasn't exactly stacked back then). Also, he didn't mind if people hit back, the problem was it was almost impossible to hit him.

I think he did more for the sport than anyone else in his era. He brought an influx of young people to boxing who were drawn in by the excitement. He sold out fights and put on one hell of a show.

I know he had an ego, but I think he was entitled to it. I think it's good for boxing to have people who act that way. It builds up pre-fight hype (see Lewis v. Tyson, et. al.) and makes the sport more popular.

He dodged Juan Manuel Marquez didn't he? I'm not sure though, I'm not an expert on that period.

Anthony Joshua got very lucky against Savon tonight.

went to the boxing tonight

our bantam was ok, won a pretty boring contest

the japanese guy was really unlucky imo, pummelled his opponent (went down 5 times) in the last round and somehow drew it 10-10. he's appealing.

joshua got beaten up in the last round. no idea how he got the decision. horrible judging

biggest cheer was for the japanese fighter, although the belorussian called ivan got the biggest sustained chants (he was fighting a german)

The Japanase guy is going through, the result of that fight has been overturned.

I find it funny when there are huge cheers whenever a british judge is announced.

A bit disappointed in Richie Woodhalls's performance as the commentator.

I know hes been working with team GB but he could be at least a little less biased with what hes seeing .

Shame he did not come out and say what everyone else was saying and that is the fact that Joshua clearly lost that fight.

Deadspin article and video on that ludicrously fixed fight. WTF? At least TRY to not make your fix so blatantly obvious. If the guy you are rigging it for can't even stand up then at some point you just have to give it up, right? Oh well, ref probably still gets paid by the mobsters or whatever for not even counting when the fighter goes down.

What the hell is going on here?

Love the announcers on this video. Well done to them for crying foul through the whole thing even BEFORE the rigged decision.

btw on review the japanese fighter got tagged a TON in the start of the 3rd when he was trying to up the pace, even scoring not as ridiculous as it seems

altho shoulda been a DQ

I understand I didn't see the whole round in that video. But generally speaking from my ignoramus understanding of boxing, not being able to freaking stand up generally means you lose. No count from ref is kind of frightening.

Boxing is one of my favourite sports .... but the sport really has shot itself in the foot over the last couple of years at least ..

We all know this kind of stuff has been going on for years in boxing but its still crap to see more stuff like this.

Sadly ... money talks and there is little that can be done if nobody is prepared to go out on a limb and tell it as it is.

It really is sad what boxing has turned into. Insanely rigged fights just seem to be the norm nowadays.

Just look at the last 2 years:

Williams over Lara
Bradley over Pac
Helenius over Chirosa
Sturm over Macklin
Rios over Abril
Alexander over Mattysse....

And those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more.

Sad sport to be a part of.
