Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Eddie Chambers fights Wlad March 20th

Chambers only has one loss, but most of his wins have been against tomato cans. He's fought only a few notable fighters: Alexander Dimitrenko, Samuel Peter, Calvin Brock and Alexander Povetkin. He went 3-1 in those fights with zero knockouts.

Seems to have zero knockout power (18 KOs in 35 wins, all of which were against the tomato cans). Wlad should make quick work of him.

Both guys have vulnerable chins. Both guys have great punching power. That's a recipe for a great fight.

Also, Haye is only a 2-1 underdog vs Wlad which imo says a lot.

I was very impressed with Chambers boxing ability (reflexes, head/feet movement, accuracy) in his last fight. If he has it in him to fight that sort of perfect fight without getting caught, he has a chance to win a decision.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Okay this being off got me thinking about some other super or not so super fights which also didn't materialize at the time. Feel free to add your own. I'll try to think of some others as well:

Riddick Bowe vs Lennox Lewis:

I don't remember who dodged who exactly, just that it ended with Bowe throwing the WBC belt in a trashcan instead of fighting Lewis.
Lewis easily had the better career and is arguably an all time heavyweight great but at the time, with both undefeated, Bowe was generally considered the better fighter and I tend to agree. He faded very quickly and definitely underachieved but for a brief time he was very very good and at that time I think he knocks out Lewis, while Lewis easily beats him if we're talking later career.
Bowe had decent enough boxing skills to stay with Lewis somewhat and his power and superior chin would see him through I think.

George Foreman vs Larry Holmes

Ok definitely not a great fight and not something I wanted to see even. We're talking 90s versions here and it just jumped into my head, so here it is.
Personally I think Holmes just outjabs Foreman, like he did many others at the time, while Foreman wouldn't land much at all or be very active even, but it needs to be said quite possibly enough to have the judges screw Holmes and gift him a decision in a very boring "fight" that's more of a novelty act.

Oscar De La Hoya vs Kostya Tszyu

This was one I really wanted to see as a young boxing fan but unfortunately Tszyu's shock collapse to Verno Phillips took if off the map and it never really got back with Tszyu staying at Jr Welter for years to come reestablishing himself as a great fighter, while DLH jumped around collecting belts and big paydays.

At the time they were two of the most talented young boxers. With DLH obviously the most famous while Tszyu at the time was more like the secret phenomenon.
I remember Ring magazine putting both of them in their P4P top 10 after only very few fights.

As much as I hate to acknowledge it, since I was a big Tszyu fan and disliked De La Hoya, I think Oscar wins this. If Verno Phillips could exploit holes in Tszyu's armor at the time, so could De La Hoya with his laser jab and greater speed. If he keeps it safe he'll win a decision just about every time, if it's more of a brawl Tszyu has a better chance but probably still gets stopped the majority of the time, boo!

Vitaly vs Wladimir:

This will probably never happen but...

While Wlad is the more talented I think this is the one truly bad matchup for him. Vitaly defends well enough (good chin being the bonus) not to get blown away and has the kind of counter boxing skills+size that Wlad would never face against anyone else. With Wlad's weak chin he'd have to be extremely careful or get knocked out, so careful that even if he survives, he could still lose the decision I think.
If he were to show his kid brother no mercy, Vitaly knocks him out.

Roy Jones jr vs Dariusz Michalczewski:

Jones haters love to bring this fight up. How Jones dodged DM etc etc
But the thing is at that time this fight just wasn't interesting to anyone. Not to people who had seen enough of both to safely conclude that Jones was in a total different league. Not to Jones cause DM wasn't a big name outside Germany/Poland and not to DM (and not least his people) cause he made a comfortable living defending his WBO belt against nobodies at home.
Jones incredible speed and general athleticism still intact at this point would just be way too much for DM who was basically just a strong limited guy with great stamina. His defensive skills especially were pretty bad and Jones would land at will, likely stopping him whenever he would feel like it. Think Jones vs John Ruiz but with both fighters weighing the same.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Nice. A boxing thread!

Pretty good year for boxing.
pac vs clottey
floyd vs mosely
valero vs bradley (in the works) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we-FKQ9qjWE
khan vs marquez (Roach doesn't want him to fight maidana)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OY2ByuLKXS4
cotto vs foreman
gamboa vs. lopez

Really haven't been interested in the heavyweight division after the fall of Tyson (which I consider the best heavyweight in his prime). He remains the youngest man ever to win the WBC, WBA and IBF world heavyweight titles. He won the WBC title at just 20 years, 4 months and 22 days old, after defeating Trevor Berbick by a TKO in the second round.
I still don't think there will ever be a heavyweight fighter as exciting to watch as he was in his prime. Best boxer to come from NY for sure.

Here's a pretty sweet clip of Mike Tyson in his prime.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-x_AP0r-Gc#t=4m34s (around 5 minutes long)

Was bored and saw some other pretty fun clips from the past.

Valero vs. Bradley is a possibility for June. Bradley's promoter said they are willing to fight Valero in Mexico and Arum expressed interest in the fight

Khan is fighting JMM, i believe. Maidana would have exposed his chin.

Bradley isn't ready for Pac yet imo.

Agree on Pavlik vs Williams/Martinez. Pavlik is fighting Martinez sometime in April, IIRC.

Agree on Bute

Agree on Hopkins, but he's fighting RJJ (ugh).

Seems like this has already been covered! Bute is fighting Miranda btw.

As much as I used to love RJJ, this fight is at least a decade late, LOL, nevermind the fact he lost to Green in the 1st rd.

I can't believe Hopkins/RJJ is on PPV. If they're going to fight, at least show it on HBO regular cable. Who will buy this ****?

At least it seems that they still dislike each other: http://www.ringtv.com/blog/1625/the_...intrigue_fans/

Hopkins and RJJ are 2 of the biggest names in boxing. I think Trinidad vs. RJJ got 500k+ ppv buys just a year ago. Similar type of fight.

Hope RJJ can somehow pull it off.

Definitely rooting for Hopkins in this one, RJJ is way too cocky considering his recent fights. Hopkins is gonna tear him apart imo.

Allan Green has already replaced Taylor. He was the designated 7th before the competition started.

Looks like it's setting up for a Ward-Abraham final, which would be epic.

Although I wouldn't count out Kessler just yet...he's a far, far better fighter than what he showed us against Ward. I don't know what was wrong with him that night, but he looked awful.

I think it's a joy to watch him fight.

Floyd is like the Phil Hellmuth of boxing imo. Big mouth personality who is good at his craft.

Emmy Award, yo!

Sad irony that all of the people he beat up are much healthier then he. Cooper, Chuvallo, Shavers, Terrel, Lyle, and Foreman look totally undamaged. But Frazier looked visibly damaged since the right time for him to retire would have been in Manila not after a second beating by Foreman one year later. Norton was perfectly healthy before the car accident. Spinks is a sad case but I don't think it is boxing that's slurring his speech.

Interesting how they all thank Ali. Frazier cried. Very good show.

I see Kessler beating Froch. I don't know why, but I hate Froch so much.

I read this article about John Ruiz and Miguel Diaz:

http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news;_yl...yhoo&type=lgns

Miguel Diaz quote: “I stopped the workout and said, ‘What the hell is that?’ ” Diaz recalled. “That’s not how you fight.”

LOL

Ya good article. It will be interesting to see if he actually is better in the ring with this new guy (fighting wise and entertainment wise), or if it's just the same **** different trainer.

Most likely, his stylistic change won't be effective. But you never know. Seems like he has a good attitude.
