He took a ton of shots against Cotto too. He probably doesn't have that weak a chin.

PBF is no warrior, but he fought Cotto's fight and still won. He could have spent all day popping him with jabs but let Cotto get inside and fought him.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

finally watched that kahn/garcia fight, and it was very entertaining. i really wish kahn could've gotten his **** together after getting up from that hook, or even after that second knockdown where his gloves touched the mat. it was nice to see him try, but he and his fanbase have to be super disappointed.

That's nonsense. Mayweather has spent his whole career hardly getting hit and being safety first and suddenly he decides to get into a scrap with Cotto when he doesn't need to?? You don't think he had something to do with the fact that either Mayweather is past his best or Cotto is the best fighter he has fought in a long time?

yea cotto really impressed in that fight

he might be my favorite fighter as a person. Its impossible to knock that guy after watching him on all those HBO series, dude is just a straight fighter. Doesn't get cocky, always respects his opponent even when its that POS Margarito and he works hard and stays with his family

straight up baller

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

not a fight guru like some of you guys, but it seemed to me like floyd was just laying on the ropes and trying to avoid shots, when he could've easily danced around/jabbed + quick combo + jab + danced his way thru the fight.

im sure cotto some say in that, but that was mostly floyd imo.

i'm no expert either but i don't think you are giving cotto enough credit. I mean who has he lost to? Manny, Floyd and a cheating Margarito? His hook is vicious

what's next for garcia then?

his annoying dad kinda won me over with his 'if amir was american & hispanic he would be a relative unknown rather than a big attraction', because it's true

Cotto did exactly what he had to do to win, but Floyd is just on a whole different level. He fought Floyd better than anybody else did in recent memory.

Cotto seems like a really solid guy. Given the trash personalities that seem to be pervasive in the sport, it's pretty refreshing to see a person like Cotto fighting.

Regarding a chin I think a fighter should make sure he's got a strong neck and make sure he's in shape and not cutting too much to make weight.

Improving general defensive skills and awareness helps the chin as well. Many of the most devastating KO's we see are punches that the fighter never saw and wasn't braced to take. Khan held up pretty well considering he got nailed by a punch he didn't see and which hit him right below and maybe slightly behind his ear. That's the kind of punch that often leaves the victim out cold on the canvas.

Almost any fighter is getting put on queer street if not outright KO'd by the hook Khan took. Some fighters just have the skills and awareness not to eat those punches.

I don't think he's chinny, but he isn't as durable as people he'd want to be compared with if he had hopes of being anywhere near the top of the P4P list.

I politely disagree

Half of that punch was taken on the neck .. it was not even flush on the chin and the effect was disastrous ..

Its happened before with Khan and for whatever reason some shots have a really bad effect on him ... its like his whole body goes into silly mode and there seems little he can do about it.

Jake La Motta's reputation for having a great chin often came from rolling with punches rather than just taking them head on like some brawlers do.

I also think having a good chin is something that just comes with time. It sounds weird, but I believe that developing a good chin begins with getting smashed in the face with haymaker after haymaker throughout your career and getting used to that pain. Khan doesn't seem like the type of guy that would go to war like Micky Ward or Erik Morales.

He is chinny.

Big punchers knock him out. Willie Lomond not noted for his punching power knocked him down.

Being chinny is not the end of the world. Lennox Lewis knocked out cold by Hasim Rahman and Oliver "Atomic Bull" McCall managed to be heavyweight champ despite being chinny.

Khan if managed well could easily win a world title again. However, if he fights big punchers then he has to be super cautious a la Lennox Lewis v David Tua and Lennox Lewis v Mike Tyson.

Gotta love how Amir Khan says he's not blaming anyone or anything apart from himself yet goes on to whinge about how lucky Garcia was, how long his training camp was, how Freddy didn't give his full attention.

Him and Freddy are done for sure.

Khan is full of excuses

What Khan needs to do is stop thinking hes a superstar and has to put in superstar performances.

He has all the boxing tools to out box many opponents but chooses to stand and fight to prove whatever he thinks he has to prove.

Being surrounded by people constantly telling him hes as good as Mayweather does not help ... he needs to realise he is NOT a elite fighter and be more realistic.

Im just not sure Khan's ego will allow that though ..

Im not sure where Khan goes from here, there are not that many great fights at 140 and its obvious he wants to move upto 147 to fight the bigger names .. but the problem with that is the fact there are some pretty decent fighters at 147 and most of them can bang a bit.

From what I know about MMA striking and boxing this is 100% false. The more damage you take the worse you chin becomes over time.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

wtf happened with broner/escobedo weight problems? i turned hbo on late, they were interviewing escobedo, and he's saying he got a great deal to take the fight, but wouldnt say how much. max asked if it was twice as much and esco smiled, but wouldnt confirm it.

i'm assuming broner didnt make weight?

btw does anyone else enjoy roy jones jr calling fights? he's got a speech problem from fighting, and some may knock him for that, but i like him paired with max/jim. it beats larry merchant's slow talk.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Broner weighed in at 133.5. Escobedo's advisor said that if Broner weighed more than 140 this morning, they were withdrawing from the fight. Broner weighed in this morning at 143.5.

It appeared the fight was going to get cancelled, but Al Haymon came in to negotiate and apparently resolved the issue.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Broner is probably my least favorite boxer. Made Escobedo come down in weight to fight him and Broner didn't even try to make the weight. He was posting pictures of twinkles and Twix bars on twitter.

And he tries to be Floyd so much. He literally copies everything Floyd Mayweather does.

He's a good fighter though, but he needs to step up in weight.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

ah, thanks.

broner is awesome. he's a great fighter, and likes to entertain before/after. he's a poor mans floyd right now tho.

post fight interview where he fakes the proposal was funny. "will you brush my hair?" i can see why ppl wouldnt like him tho, he's too cocky. but like floyd, he walks it.
