Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Apparently Floyd jr called Paq on the phone to get this done. Paq confirmed it with Pinoy newspapers.

This could actually happen.

Floyd called Pac directly. Both confirm they talked about getting the fight made.

Floyd issued a statement that basically says "Manny told me directly he wants to fight. Bob Arum is the only thing in the way."

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Wow. Nice job by Floyd taking matters into his own hands and calling Manny directly. Also, Manny keeps saying that if it's 50-50 then the fight can be made. He has never made any eye injury excuses, or temp. stadium excuses, as far as I know. All the excuses come from Bob Arum. It seems to me that Manny is willing to fight on May 5th.

It's clear that Floyd wants the fight. I believe Manny wants the fight. So only Bob Arum is in the way, as Floyd said.

GTFO Arum.

He speaks on behalf of Pac claiming things that the boxing world aren't sure is true (i.e. Manny's eye cut which Manny ended up saying was a nonissue) as well as making stipulations that make the fight essentially unmake able (date change that would affect Floyd's prison sentence, the need for a different stadium ect.)

What it boils down to is that if Pac loses he loses a lot of money bringing power in smaller matches that he is essentially a lock to win so we all speculate that Arum has been the major opposition to this fight for a while now.

Arum doesn't want the fight to be in May 5th or at the venue Floyd has booked. Since he's Pacquios promoter PAC can't fight without Arum being involved.

This has probably been the story all along with both Arum (maybe Pac as well, I'm not sure if he cares or not) and Mayweather. Obviously Mayweather now believes he is very likely to win the fight (after watching Pac-JMM 3) so things have changed.

ahh, so Arum's motivations are because he wants to preserve Pac's earning power?

Yes, pretty much.

As his promoter that is essentially always been his only real goal (and to be fair, his only real job). Up to this point he's seen a lot of smaller fights being worth more to his business model than one big mega fight.

Yup

There is a lot of stuff we don't know here. I've been of the opinion that Pac's sole motivation right now is basically political office, but it seems I might be wrong. If Pac really does want this fight (since it's not like he needs any more publicity), I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it's because he still loves boxing and wants to fight the best guy out there.

If that's true, this is awesome. Someone needs to kneecap Bob Arum and get this thing done.

Keep in mind that Floyd usually mentions the fact that Arum is scum and still owes him money whenever he mentions him. It's not entirely unlikely that Floyd would do this just to make Arum look bad (worse?)

I cant really see how making the biggest $ fight in history (or close to it) could ever be counter to the goal of maximising Pac's earnings. PBF-Pac is worth at least twice as much as any other fight, and if its close like people think it would be they can do it again in 9 months!

Must be some other factors in play.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Floyd:

"He asked about a 50/50 split and I told him no that can't happen, but what can happen is you can make more money fighting me than you have made in your whole career. I also let him know I'm in control on my side but he needs to get on the same page with his promoter so we can make this fight happen."

He actually may have had a legit argument for having greater than 50/50 a couple of years ago, it seems like Pac is the bigger name now though. As long as Floyd is making such demands then the fight is not going to happen.

I think you might be right but I also think that the real reason they are fighting now is because on Arum's end he did not feel the same way as what I have bolded. If Pac took this fight 3-5 years ago and lost, then rematched again and lost his career would look nothing like it does now. They would have had two big paydays but missed out on 4 years worth of smaller paydays that added up to more and kept Manny as a household pound for pound name and endorsement magnet. As Pac's career is taking its natural course and coming closer to retirement they now have to make his last set of fights big to maximize money. I don't think Arum feels that that time has come yet, which is why he doesn't seem on board for a pac PBF fight, but I think that's the general thought process from Pac's management side.

Serious question.

Who is the bigger draw between the 2 worldwide?

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

I wouldn't worry too much about the split. It's just nonsense, this is obviously a fifty fifty split.
Paq is kind of dumb for going around in several interviews saying he'd take a smaller cut. Just asking for trouble.
If the date gets resolved, there's no way this fight fails due to Floyd wanting a larger cut. Mostly posturing.

I'm thinking PAC by a fair bit but I could be off and it be closer to even.

The last three fights, pac has had more ppv buys than floyd's last three. The fight should be 50/50. Floyd has ducked Pac yet again.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Anyways, JMM wants to fight Lamont Peterson in Dallas Cowboy Stadium with a post-fight commitment that the winner gets Pacquiao. Interesting fight, but I think JMM handles Peterson fairly easily. Not sure it's possible because Peterson was ordered to rematch Khan immediately, which he is now appealing.

I don't like the fact that the winner gets Pacquiao either. Much rather see Pac face Ortiz/Berto winner in Nov. (since Floyd fight is never happening).
