Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

I'm fine going with whatever the consensus of the thread is.

I prefer my way for ease of draft/participation/post-draft comparison, but I'm not going to pretend the way you've suggested won't be more fun if we can keep it alive to completion.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

It seems like it might be prudent to go with a "Heavyweight exemption" if we use the 5 classes I suggested. Namely, if a guy (like Dempsey) fought in what was then HW (he usually weighed around 180-190 I think) then you can take him as a HW and assume he'd make weight.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

the problem with only 5 weights, is that the smaller guys of the decided interval gets ****ed. I could never draft a jofre because he would get raped as a bw against the lw's.

But I'm fine with whatever really, i just think the 8 original weights poses less problems than what will occur when you try to lump too many weights together.

But once again, fine with whatever you or the rest pick since I'm not the one organizing the draft anyway.

(not to mention, i doubt any of the tiny heavies would get drafter given the rich history of the division)

Was trying to make the post-draft stuff workable. 8 or 16 work well with a bracket format.

yeah... or 8 teams, 8 classes. i think grouping too much is bad.

but when voting at the end, having the GOAT heavyweight / middleweight should count more than say the goat cruiser or bantam, if that make sense.

If someone picked Ray Robinson at welterweight, would he be off the table for middleweight?

It's not comparing stables in total, it's comparing the fighters as if they were fighting each other. One team's HW vs. the other team's HW, and so on.

Yeah, you can pick a guy at any weight he fought, no one else can draft him at any weight after he's taken obv.

I'm sold on the 8 classes thing. Who's down?

right, i got that. wasn't sure if you were determining an overall "winner". if there was, my point was winning the heavyweight "matchup" should prob be valued more than having the best flyweight..

Ohhh, I see. Yeah, not doing a "best overall" sort of thing, more a tournament (at least, that's what I'd like to do).

Really, it would be easiest just to have Geddy sit out and the decide from our teams at the end, but he wants to participate (selfish prick )

If that were to happen my strategy would change drastically.

7 canadians + pacquiao (Mayweather would drop to like 555555555th spot)

They should make a film on Chuvalos life. Hes had it quite rough to say the least.

As for the draft, come on. I know boxing ain't as hip as mma among the youngsters, but surely more than 4 would be interested in this?

With NoJacket we have 5, but I'm sure there will be more once I start the interest thread, I'd just like to offer the first crack to Boxing thread guys.

KoC,
8 or 16 would be ideal.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

16 seems like asking for trouble (inactivity mostly). But I'm not as clued in to the popularity of boxing on this forum, as you guys are.

Thanks for doing this btw. I'm too lazy to organize such a thing, but It seems like a lot of fun.

I agree, I think 8 is the sweet spot.

Meh, thank me when it actually happens. I'm contemplating getting 8 people to sign up and then demanding blood testing up to the day of the draft. It is a boxing draft after all...

Yep, but he's kept his head up throughout. My grandfather was a former light heavyweight provincial amateur champ and won a regional Golden Gloves qualifier in the late 50's, and being a Croatian-Canadian family, Chuvalo holds a special place in his heart. I've never met him before but my grandfather has.

Lineup,

Hopkins,
Robinson,
Monzon,
Hagler,
LaMotta,
Tiger
Ketchel gotta be in there somewhere IMO. Hagler, Robinson, Monzon & Hopkins were all such great tacticians, I think we'd get a series of very close decisions/chess matches among them, nothing remotely like Hagler-Hearns or Zale-Graziano.

Hopkins perhaps a sixteenth of a step below the other three, imo, and Robinson was in his mid 30's by the time he got to 160, tho he certainly could've hung with most 175ers in his youth aside from maybe Bob Foster & Michael Spinks.

IMO Hagler-Monzon is a dreadful style matchup. Would come down to where the fight was held & if Marvin got cut at some point. I think Marvin had a hand speed edge. I say if you run a 100K sim, Hagler by decision gets about 50K hits, Monzon by decision 40K, Hagler by KO 5K, Monzon by KO 2K, draw 3K.
