Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

hatton vs floyd 24/7 = goat.

rest has been meh compared to it, especially Pacquiaos.

they should have done an 24/7 of margarito cotto instead. Or Wladimir haye. I realize why they don't though.

yea, he deserved to get DQed for that headbutt, there's just too much on the line for boxing and everyone else for the ref to end the fight that way

it was a cheap shot, but a deserved cheap shot, you don't need to hug 9 times

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Haye-Wladimir would have been epic. Obviously it would leave people feeling even more disapointed after watching the actual fight though.

To me it looks like Pacquiao and Floyd are both past their primes, the days of us being wowed by either of them may well be over.

meh, I wasn't really impressed. I would be annoyed if i paid $50 for that, Ortiz didn't seem to care afterwards. I wonder if he was really there to win?

From here I think Floyd goes underground before calling out Khan after he moves up to 147.

The argument is mostly "Stricter testing is great, just don't come up with it on your 41st fight against your toughest opponent (who has never failed a drug test)."

Right or wrong, if reeks of excuses.

Ortiz didn't care because he knew he was going to lose most likely. He was probably even on cards at that point (not counting the deduction) but he wasn't going to keep that up going forward.

His corner probably told him his check cleared, and he was done.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Ortiz is a ****ing moron and it showed last night. Whatever, he was way in over his head anyways. Floyd looked really, really sharp, but again...was this fight ever a legitimate threat?

Merchant would've been his hardest fight out of the last 10, so at least it'd be an increase in quality of competition.

Mayweather GOAT claims are beyond laughable at this point.

Because it's far beyond what the NSAC requires to sign off on a prizefight. Mayweather never seemed to have a problem with the NSAC regulations for the majority of his career, until Pacquiao came into the picture.

He's not an idealistic crusader. He's a *****. An extremely talented *****, but a ***** nonetheless.

Ortiz got what he deserved but Mayweather's legacy is getting severely tarnished at this point. People are quite rightly fed up with him.

Which points do you disagree with? I really hope it's not regarding his GOAT claims.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

What an unreal finish that was.

Always been a big Larry Merchant fan and that was probably his most epic performance ever.

Don't think Mayweather looked THAT good if held up against previous lofty standards. Ortiz was a sucker for his straight punches, without any sickening hand speed coming from Mayweather, and while his own defense was crafty I'm not so sure about his general speed and reflexes. He was hittable basically. More so in than in the past (with a danger of stating the obvious) and I doubt that's something which will increase any motivation to ever face Pacquiao.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

I don't really follow boxing but I'm really confused about the sentiment that Floyd somehow wronged Ortiz by knocking him out when the fight was on. If it's a sucker punch the ref would've DQ'ed him right? How is it classless to knock your opponent out when the fight is on? IMO this is like a pro sports team whining about their opponent running up the score. If you were playing better this wouldn't have happened.

I can see blaming the ref for starting the fight and still looking ringside, but why was what Floyd did cheap?

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Because the opponent clearly did not think it was on critikal.

Nevertheless, Ortiz not only went for a terribly obvious headbutt just before, but then tried to hit him 1-2 times after that headbutt (why doesn't anybody mention that?).

Tough to feel sorry for a guy that would do that (lucky for Floyd he dodged his shots both before and after the headbutt).

It's disappointing though, if you wanted this garbage WWE does it better. I wanted to see some boxing, decisions are fine, not every fighter is Mike Tyson.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

After Floyd went off on Merchant, I thought "Boy, Sklansky sure is lucky he didn't piss Floyd off too much in that DUCY story." We can all agree David was probably > 1% at one point to get beaten up by Floyd, based on that story.

Good point. Looking at the replay of the last headbutt again, you'll see that PBF looks at the ref while Ortiz hits him again. Much like PBF, only illegal.

not sure I get your point...
until the ref pulls him off why would he stop punching?

headbutts happen all the time

Still doesn't make sense how that's Floyd's fault.

So Floyd knew the fight was on but Ortiz didn't, and that's somehow Floyd's fault but not Ortiz's?

In football, no one blames the WR for getting up and running to the endzone when there's no whistle and the DB thinks the play is down by contact. Is he supposed to "be a gentleman" and wait for the DB to get up? Part of your job as a professional athlete is awareness.
