Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Thinking I might have been too hard on Mares considering his contention that the low blows were caused by Agbeko pushing Mares down as he was delivering body shots, I went back and slowmoed the first couple of rounds. It looked like some of the shots declared low by the announcers were on the belt line or partially below when looked at closely. And Agbeko did appear to be pushing Mares down. The thing is that Mares would launch these attacks by slipping under Agbeko left hooks so that Agbeko coming forward really had nowhere else to go but on top of Mares. imo, Mares created the situation and it was incumbent on him to adjust his delivery accordingly. In other situations Agbeko was guarding his body with both arms leaving only below the belt open to attack. Intent on carrying out his body attack Mares threw where Agbeko's body was open - below the belt. Not only was this dirty but dumb. Agbeko's head was wide open but Mares ignored it.

This guy thinks the push-downs justified the low blows and the ref called the fight correctly.
EastSide Boxing

This guy has the opposite opinion.
Beats, Boxing and Mayhem

I don't see any excuse for the Mares low blows against Darchinyan. (ironic opening segment)
youtube - Mares low blows vs Darchinyan

I think Mares is just a low blow specialist and should be quickly disqualified in the next fight he employs the tactic. At the very least his next opponent should retaliate with a vengence.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

I was really hoping that Agbeko just said "**** it" and left the ring when the ref called that second knockdown. It's also a shame that Agbeko's promoter wasn't someone like Lou Dibella, he would have gone absolutely mental.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

PTB, no matter what is making Mares land the low blows (Agbeko pushing him down), in the end they are still low blows and it is solely the responsibility of the ref to stamp it out.

seriously we expect Mares to change his tactics when the ref is letting him get away with it?

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Long-time boxing fan, never knew there was a boxing thread on 2+2 otherwise I would've been in it ages ago!

A big fan David Tua fan but it's time to say goodbye to the big man after his rematch loss to Monte Barrett a few nights ago. Tua had so much potential yet never really realised it, I guess. Or as others have suggested, maybe he was never really that good?

News reports says he will continue to fight on but I think he's done unless he wants to become a punching bag for someone to pay the bills. He looked out of shape and was cut in the 3rd round, which I haven't seen ever! Although, he is still yet to be KO'd.

I thought the second half of Tua vs Barrett was very entertaining. I wouldn't want to see in with any of the top 10 guys but I would love to see him in something like Prizefighter.

it took him 29 fights to fight someone good. And im pretty sure thats a lot to do with his management.

Both Ward and hopkins has called bute out, and I'm sure kessler and froch will fight him if they are paid what they are worth.

Yes and no. He does great business in Montreal and that's just not an attractive option for a lot of the bigger names, for a variety of reasons.

same with calzaghe in cardiff, klitschkos in germany, kessler in copenhagen etc etc.

People want to fight him. I think It's a bit much to say everyone is ducking him, when hes gone so long without fighting anybody.
His best win is still Andrade, yet hes seen as possibly the best at 168.

Hell, hopkins went to canada twice, despite getting robbed the first time, to fight Pascal. He'd do it again without a single doubt.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Hopkins is the exception to the rule. He's bat**** crazy.

Anyways, let's not forget it took Calzaghe 40 fights before he met up with Jeff Lacy and started to attract serious attention outside of the UK. Kessler didn't fight anyone really significant until 30 something fights into his career (Anthony Mundine on the road, I guess?). You're making it sound like it's a travesty that Bute is only starting to take on some big names now 29 fights in.

And I still don't think Bute is all that marketable, especially compared to the examples you've listed. Can't speak English, doesn't represent a large non-English speaking ethnic group either...I'm not sure if Bute had any real choice in the way his path has turned out.

No, I'm making it sound like i think It's ridiculous to say everyones ducking Bute.

Bute is a typical hometown favorite who probably makes a lot of money fighting in his own backyard against inferior opponents. I'm not hating on that, but please don't tell me people are ducking him. Almost every topfighter in the division (and there i don't include pavlik) seemingly wants to fight him.

Then why wasn't he invited into the original Super Six?

I always assumed it was because he was an HBO fighter, not sure if that's the real reason though.

It would be good to see Ward fight Bute, assuming he beats Froch (I think he will). I think Ward beats Bute. They're both Showtime fighters, so it should be > 25% probability.

Hopkins will probably lose to Dawson, but I won't be surprised if he wins.

Re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

Kessler declined the fight but we have no idea what the offer was. Pavlik claimed Kessler was offered over $3 million to fight Bute but apparently that is utter nonsense. (Pavlik was probably off his face when he said it anyway)

We hear a lot in boxing about how fighter A declined to fight fighter B but it doesn't tell the whole story, for all we know Kessler could have been offered a Diet Pepsi and a packet of M&Ms.

because he got a ****load of money to fight a lesser opponent for a title.

Seems most people are very unhappy with the money they get offered to fight Bute.
Pavlik, i could write off as him being crazy.
But both Kessler and Johnson also complained. Now Glen negotiated some more money, but still. Some people make serious money off bute and big names should be paid thereafter.

I think the roster of names on butes resume speaks for itself. Either hes/his management not interested in testing him, or they just underpay by a significant amount. Glen is a good test, but hes hardly one of the biggest names of the division. I'll settle for it though seeing as its the best fighter Butes fought by a good margin..

Also, for you canadians. Whos more popular in canada? Bute or Pascal? I guess Bute?
Why won't he fight Pascal? Pascal seems to want it and it would be a legitimate fight in my eyes.

Him being an hbo fighter? Not an interesting enough name at the time?

Looking at the state of the invited fighter at the time, i think all the euros had a better case for being invited, and they needed americans aswell for it to be viable on showtime.
I highly doubt the higher ups at showtime "ducked" bute, so I'm not sure why its even mentioned.

edit: coming off as a huge bute hater itt. Not the case. I'd root for him against anyone in the division not named kessler. Possibly won't root for him against the road warrior because hes an awesome person.
Against ward, dirrell, froch, pascal I'd snapback bute.

Also, interesting 30day weighin for floyd vs ortiz.

"danrafaelespn Dan Rafael
The wretched WBC held 30-day weigh-in for @FloydMayweather & @ViouciousOriz today. Mayweather 149 pounds, Ortiz 157.4. Max allowed was 162."

Mayweather seems to still be a really small ww in terms of actual weight. He'll probably fight at close to 150,

maidana vs. bradley would be a good fit right now. Torn rotator cuff (possibly) could be a long layoff for guerrero.

Anyone watch Mayweather/Ortiz 24/7 last night?

Crazy how Sr. and Jr. are still at each other's throats.

And huge LOL when Floyd Jr. called his dad a fa**ot in front of everyone.
