Also, is there any reason why there doesn't seem to be any big HW challenges coming from America? The last champion I am aware of was Ruiz who was destroyed by Haye so I'm a little confused as I have the impression that historically the US dominated the division.
I love watching big boxing fights but know very little about the sport really.
I don't think today's top guys would defeat any of the classic hw champs (Tyson, Ali, Louis, Holmes etc.), but I think the hw scene is greatly improved over what it was just a few years ago. Additionally, the fights that need to be made are getting made, making the division exciting for the first time in a while.
I think the America heavyweights aren't what they used to be because decades ago a top heavyweight boxer would earn far more than athletes in other sports would make. Now, other sports pay far more than they used to, and only the top echelon of heavyweight boxers are making huge money. Many of the upcoming American heavyweights have crossed over from other sports after flaming out for various reasons. Seth Mitchell, who fights tonight on Showtime is an example of this.
