In the Philippines, singing and holding political office are desired outcomes.

Anyone watching the Paul Williams fight tonight? Should be a good one. I actually tutor kids in a boxing club in Virginia, and Paul Williams randomly trains at this free public gym. I met him multiple times, watched him train, watched him spar with the only person hes lost to, and I can say that he is a very cool and laid back guy. It is also truly incomprehensible how much faster this guy is with his hands than I am.

Manny, because I am self-conscious and wouldn't want to wake up everyday knowing that so many people think I am a giant douche. I also don't think it would be fun to be bent over by the IRS annually.

Manny- He has a whole nation behind him.... he can't walk anywhere in the Philippines without someone recognizing him.

I could walk by Floyd today and not notice.

Wow a ton of fail here. I didn't see the fight, but it seems very strange to have one judge score 119-110 for one fighter and another judge score it 115-113 for the other and the third 114-114. I've never heard of such a huge disparity between cards.

Second, how can this be a majority decision? Only one of the judges scored the bout for Williams. It should be a draw. Yes he got more total points, but what if the third judge had scored it 115-113 Martinez instead? Williams would still lead on total points. To me it just seems like a joke that you can get a decision win when the other guy was ahead on as many scorecards as you.

After Amir Khan's 1st round KO of Dmitry Salita last night, there was talk of him fighting on the undercard to Pac-PBF... cue "glass jaw" comments.

It definitely looked like a close one. The crazy score may have been because the judge was seeing William's activity. No way it was 10 rounds to 2 though.

Fight was over with the 1st solid punch landed. I was hoping that it would be somewhat competitive. It will be interesting to see how Khan develops after a few years with Freddie Roach. I wonder if Khan will look to avenge his loss to Prescott.

Yeah the problem with such an early KO is that you don't really know whether it was just a freak occurance or not. Salita claimed he wasn't hurt, just stunned, but also said that he couldn't even see where the punches were coming from as they were so fast.

He's already developed a ton as a boxer under Roach, who is saying he's the 2nd fastest fighter he's ever worked with (behind Pac obv) and is adamant that he's destined for huge things on the world stage. I know Roach is going to have some bias towards his fighter, but he's not the kind of guy to make OTT statements.

Khan was talking about fighting Prescott again (it was his thing in the amateurs to go back and fight anybody who ever beat him justt to set the record straight) but Roach and Frank Warren have both said there's not much point as Prescott is beneath him now. Also with Prescott's loss last night to Kevin Mitchell, he'll have fallen even further off the radar and a rematch seems pointless when there are much bigger opponents out there. He's got a lot of critics (mainly people who have only ever seen the 1 fight vs Prescott) but I think the next few years will hold big things for Khan.

I figured to get the average fan psyched for a boxing event, they would need to be heavyweights to get the "greatest fighter in the world" claim going.

Clearly.

re: SE Boxing Thread (still waiting for PBF v. Pac)

I missed the Prescott comments from Warren and Roach. I figured that with Khan up at 140 now and Prescott still at 135, a rematch was unlikely. Good thing is that the fighters will have enough pop at 140+ that at some point Khan will be tested again. It would be great to see Khan and Roach bond last long term, like the one with Pacquiao.

It was a great fight, and I would have scored it 115-113 for Williams. Martinez was not doing much of anything besides tieing up Williams for the second half of the fight, but he was catching Williams with the more powerful punches. I was extremely impressed with Williams chin/heart, because he took some ridiculous shots that would have knocked down just about anyone. Martinez also appeared to start fighting slightly dirty as he got more tired, and his "inadvertent" headbutt in the 4th round opened a massive cut which Williams had to go to the hospital for after the fight. I think the excessive clinching by Williams had to cost him the fight though, because he just looked so gassed in the last 3 rounds, and I felt like had he put up more a fight in the last 3 rounds he would have won the fight.

Very entertaining fight, I recommend watching the replay if you didn't watch it last night. I was worried Williams was getting knocked out in the first three rounds because Martinez really was dominating and hitting him hard with counter right hooks, but in the 4th round it looked like Martinez started to slow down and Williams was evading his punches more often and countering well. Unfortunate that neither of these guys can seem to land a big fight, because I was impressed with both of their performances. I would have been perfectly happy if the result was a draw, because it was a really close fight, but I do think Williams won all of the toss up rounds with little action. I also think had the fight continued for a few more rounds, Martinez would have gotten killed. He was totally out of gas and fell to his knees twice from exhaustion without even getting hit in the last 3 rounds.

To score this fight 119-110 is just bad for boxing. There is no way you could watch that fight and score it that way, unless all you are doing is scoring the round based on who threw more punches. Its a shame to mar a close, great fight with such a stupid scorecard.

My take : sounds interesting, I might watch at a bar, but not like I'm marking my calendar for whenever this takes place.

Where do these 2 rank in their weight classes (welter?) historically and who do they compare to?

Ok that's fine, but you are just wrong mostly and aren't a good representation of casual fans who might buy a big fight.

This will be the biggest PPV boxing match of all time, and it should crush the previous record. What other argument needs to be made for casual boxing fans being into this fight?

It is a huge ****ing deal.

Wait till you've seen the inevitable hype in the build-up to the fight. It should get a ton of coverage in the mainstream media and I'd imagine in the week or two leading up to it, you won't be able to avoid it.

They are the two best fighters in the world, at any weight class.

A fight of this significance (#1 P4P vs. #2 P4P) hasn't happened in over 15 years.

Would you say Tyson-Holyfield was the last fight of this magnitude?

IMO, you'd have to go back over 20 years. I think that Leonard vs Hagler would be more comparable to Pacquiao vs Mayweather, but better. Pacquiao and Mayweather would be comfortable at 147. I don't think Leonard could hurt Hagler at all.

I don't know enough about boxing history. I need to get on YouTube and look up all these legendary fighters like the ones mentioned in this thread.
