It was a great fight, and I would have scored it 115-113 for Williams. Martinez was not doing much of anything besides tieing up Williams for the second half of the fight, but he was catching Williams with the more powerful punches. I was extremely impressed with Williams chin/heart, because he took some ridiculous shots that would have knocked down just about anyone. Martinez also appeared to start fighting slightly dirty as he got more tired, and his "inadvertent" headbutt in the 4th round opened a massive cut which Williams had to go to the hospital for after the fight. I think the excessive clinching by Williams had to cost him the fight though, because he just looked so gassed in the last 3 rounds, and I felt like had he put up more a fight in the last 3 rounds he would have won the fight.
Very entertaining fight, I recommend watching the replay if you didn't watch it last night. I was worried Williams was getting knocked out in the first three rounds because Martinez really was dominating and hitting him hard with counter right hooks, but in the 4th round it looked like Martinez started to slow down and Williams was evading his punches more often and countering well. Unfortunate that neither of these guys can seem to land a big fight, because I was impressed with both of their performances. I would have been perfectly happy if the result was a draw, because it was a really close fight, but I do think Williams won all of the toss up rounds with little action. I also think had the fight continued for a few more rounds, Martinez would have gotten killed. He was totally out of gas and fell to his knees twice from exhaustion without even getting hit in the last 3 rounds.
To score this fight 119-110 is just bad for boxing. There is no way you could watch that fight and score it that way, unless all you are doing is scoring the round based on who threw more punches. Its a shame to mar a close, great fight with such a stupid scorecard.
