Like I said before, there is no way I can hate on Floyd's skills...in terms of God-given ability, he's one of the most gifted fighters of all time. He's accomplished a lot during his career and you're right, he had to earn those belts.

I think a lot of fight fans feel he's had the opportunity to step outside of his comfort zone and set up some era-defining fights; yet he's failed to do so but still flaunts himself as a self-prolcaimed modern-day ATG. That's not how it works.

Mayweather Sr. claiming Manny is on steroids.

---

Mayweather won't fight anyone who can beat him (Hoya 34, Baldomir 35, Marquez 35 and 20 pounds above his normal fighting weight) and spends every interview saying that he is the greatest of all time.

So it was his father he had a falling out with, who went on to train Hatton vs Pacman?

Sick that thread has so much interest already. But it should.

-The 2 best boxers of the decade.

-The best offensive boxer of the decade vs the best defensive boxer of the decade

-If Pacquiao beats Mayweather, he is amongst the GOAT in boxing.

-If Mayweather loses, his precious 0 goes.

-If Mayweather wins (convicingly), it'll be by far the biggest win of his career.

The exciting storylines for this fight go on and on.

As I picture the fight in my head, I see both fighters having the fight of their lives. Pacquiao putting intense pressure on mayweather, and mayweather responding with wicked counters leading to an eventual late KO/TKO over Pacman.

The tremendous speed of both fighters and styles make for what I see to be a jaw dropping fight. Manny will force Floyd to exchange with him, and Floyd will respond with a performance of a lifetime.

BTW, I don't say this for every fight. I'm a huge boxing fan and I don't say this bout every big fight. I knew mayweather/marquez would be a dud, dlh/mayweather etc. This fight truly deserves the attention it's gotten so far, and I'm 85% sure the fight itself will be worthy of the hype.

Why was Baldomir considered a weak opponent? He had just beaten Judah and Gatti.

God bless Gatti but the Mickey Ward trilogy clearly took years out of him. And if it wasn't already apparent that he was past his prime, his destruction at the hands of Mayweather confirmed it. Baldomir beat a 34-year old Gatti over a full year after Gatti lost to Mayweather.

Let's not get started on Judah. Epic waste of talent imo.

Also, I don't know if it's more a case of Baldomir being that weak, or just the simple fact that far better fighters were available, namely Margarito. But it's worth noting Baldomir already had 10 loses by the time he fought Mayweather.

When this fight gets the go ahead can you imagne the build up (im 100% convinced they will fight and more than once imo). It will be epic, also just looking around the boxing scene if David Haye and one of the Klitscho bros finalise a deal then we could be looking at 2 huge PPV fights in and around the same time as each other.

David Haye will be a totally different fighter compared to what we saw against that freak of a man Valuev.

Pac v Mayweather will be the bigger fight no question but this can only be good for Boxing. Was brought up watching boxing and UFC just doesnt cut it with me.

His year-and-a-half "retirement" after the Hatton fight in '07 also appeared to be one big elaborate duck...he's been quoted as saying "if I leave, the sport is dead", so why retire at the peak of your abilities and earning potential, when an abundance of elite fighters like Cotto, Mosley, Margarito and Paul Williams were ready and willing to fight? Any of those bouts would've been massive draws.

Instead, Floyd took his time, let those guys beat up on each other and eased his way into another big payday by fighting a vastly overmatched Marquez - who's a great fighter in his own right but had no chance in hell of hurting Floyd at welterweight. Marquez is a dominant lightweight at 135 lbs., but the Mayweather fight was his first ever time he fought at "welterweight" with a catchweight of 144 lbs...not only that, Mayweather missed weight by 2 pounds and incurred a $600k fine. The whole premise of the fight was a farce imo.
Wrong thread but you can replace Mayweather with Chavez Jr. Same thing. This is one of many reason why the fight will take a while if ever happen imo.

on another note, "Bedevilled by financial problems, the unbeaten American welterweight recently returned to the ring" taken from http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009...oyd-mayweather. Is this totally off? i don't understand how hes broke in his prime.. only DMX can pull that off.

This fight will be insanely epic, and should happen for the sheer scale of it and the sake of the sport as a whole... but does Mayweather care about that?

If he truly cared about going down as one of the greats, he has to take this fight on. Until he makes this fight, while no-one can question his abilities as a great boxer, he's not been truly tested at the level of a fight of this magnitude. While he may bang on about his 100% record, anyone with any knowledge of the sport will always have him down as a "dodger". The thing is, Mayweather knows this perfectly well... but if he could make the same amount of money by fighting 2 inferior opponents and protect his 100% record at the same time, I think he would be quite likely to make some excuse about "financial disagreements" and duck this fight too.

I seriously hope I'm proven wrong.

On another note, if it did happen, it'd be fairly likely to take place in May/June next year, which corresponds to my 2 week trip over the pond to Vegas. I will go on complete flying-monkey-life-tilt if the fight happens during my trip, but they decide to stage it in NY/Texas/elsewhere.

Does anybody know approximately how much tickets for a big fight in the MGM are?

That's the thing, I don't think he can make the same amount of money from two inferior fights. He made $25 mil for the De La Hoya fight...that's a good starting point for discussing hypothetical Pac-PBF numbers. The PPV shares will be massive.

And which two inferior fighters could make him, let's say, $12-15 mil per fight? That's Margarito/Cotto/Mosley territory, and all of those guys are just as much of a threat to his undefeated record. Those are all extremely dangerous fights.

He'll fight Pacquiao because he has no other option left.

That's a good point, but I don't think they're as much of a threat as Pac is. Cotto obviously can't be considered in that league after his destruction last weekend, and I'd say the others are of a similar standard.

I guess this is going to come down to what is more important to Floyd... protecting his 100% or the mega-money with the risk/reward of being one of the all-time greats/losing that 0 and the shame that'll come with it (not that losing to Pac should be something to be ashamed of, but for somebody of Mayweather's personality, it will be an unbearable situation).

The money is too much to pass up. Also, the inevitable rematch regardless of who wins. As how can he be broke, when you travel with huge entourages and spend money for yourself and 50 other people, its not hard.

Yea, I mean obv Pac > Cotto/Margarito/Mosley in terms of danger, but it's the only fight left for Mayweather that has unprecedented earning potential. That's what Mayweather came back for.

In some respects, I think this is his legacy...he isn't the GOAT after a win vs. Pacquiao and he's not even arguably the greatest of this era, but he will get the distinction of fighting in the most lucrative bout in the history of boxing. He'll lay claim to the title of boxing's biggest draw ever.

Bodog just released their lines for the fight:

Mayweather -155
Pacquiao +125

I have no intention of turning this thread into betting discussion, but since we've already discussed what we think the early lines might be itt, I figured this was worth posting.

This fight will happen, there are no and, ifs or buts about it. I predict the fight will happen no later than the summer.

We will see the assassin in Floyd come out as Manny forces him to fight for 3 minutes each round.

The only fight I can think of in my lifetime that may be bigger is Ali vs Frazier I.

The money that they make from this fight is going to be historic. I think they get anywhere from $25 - $50 million apiece.

Regardless of the outcome of the 1st fight, we will get an immediate rematch and if the stars align a trilogy.

I see 2 fights for sure and possibly 3 for otherworldly amounts of $

I respect Pac Man's skills and accomplishments very much but, my heart says Mayweather wins the 1st fight.

Mayweather beats Manny 2, possibly 3 times, pockets $100 million + and rides off into the sunset.

Are people really wondering how Floyd can be broke? There are hundreds of NBA/MLB/NFL athletes who live paycheck to paycheck. They save nothing, spend millions on cars, homes, jewelry, etc. They have multiple baby mamas who drain their income. They have posses who sap their money like crazy. They tend to invest in stupid entrepreneurial ventures their friends want to do. There are a TON of athletes who are either living paycheck to paycheck or who go broke less than 2-3 years after retirement.
