So I looked it up and watched some old films, then remembered that he disappeared into a crack house. Came back and got put on the floor in the first round, then stopped later. No longer big news. Bobby Joe Young was the loss. It came up that Pryor had beat Hearns, a favorite of mine, in the Golden Gloves. So I checked that out. Great days for boxing.
Pryor v Arguello at the old Orange Bowl, scheduled for 15. Other than not being on ABC primetime on a Wednesday, about as good as it gets.

In a sport that's had many more than its share, this was a dark day for boxing.

Glad AJ finally did the obvious, and credit to him for showing some good takedown defense when Jake kept trying to shoot the double leg, but everyone involved should've been embarrassed.

This should have been a TKO and not a no contest - but what a joke. Claims he could not see.

I've been looking over George Foreman's record, and I don't think he gets enough mention in the GOAT conversation. At one point he was 69-2 with 65 knockouts. He was never finished by a punch, he merely fell of his own weight against Ali, who did little but absorb the punishment until Foreman was empty. I just saw something that said it was 123 degrees in Zaire earlier that day; I'm claiming BS on that but couldn't find anything about it. Foreman finished all his other fights, all 80 of them. With 10 years off, he could have been about 100-2 or so.

He finished at 76-5, with 68 knockouts. Three of his losses were way north of 40 years old. Only the Ali loss and Jimmy Young outpointed him in his prime. Foreman had Young staggering all over the ring, but oddly didn't finish him. It was kind of Young's Buster Douglas moment. He was angered in the fight and he super peaked. The Young fight was also in extreme heat.

Frazier of course was never stopped early, except by Foreman twice.

He knocked great fighters into next week, and no one ever stopped him with a punch. He feinted against Ali, really was just peppered off balance and exhausted.

Gold medal winner. 40-0 start as a pro. Later won 23 in a row again.

There's a real chance that only heat could beat prime George Foreman. Later on maybe Lennox or Tyson, Mike Tyson that is.

Underrated: George Foreman.

That's one of the best sports arguments I've ever read, Fella. (The 123 degrees is complete bullshot of the purest ray serene. It was around 85 with 99.99% humidity, and similar in the Young fight)

AIM, give that man his SE Points.

In Ali's autobiography he mentioned being shocked at how skilled George was at cutting off the ring. I also read George give a technical dissection of the Norton fight; he was definitely underrated ring smarts.

Certainly no one prior to Ali would've beaten him.

Peak Holmes beats him imo but it's a war.

Shavers & Cooney (don't laugh) would've had punchers chances but they weren't as good as Ron Lyle.

Tyson's hand speed would be a serious threat but George was so much bigger, and lightyears better than Tucker & Bonecrusher.

Holyfield just too small a frame for young George. Gym muscle no match for country boy strength.

Lewis & Bowe-and, God save us all-the Douglas who beat Tyson are fascinating matches. Lewis was possibly a bit too upright & stiff to beat prime George.

Wilder, Fury, who knows. We're getting over two generations removed, but George would've been all they wanted and more.

Had Jimmy Young fought Ali the way he fought Foreman, he wins easily.

Wow ... had a thing about Leonard/Duran III come across my feed. Had no idea there was a third fight there and would have bet a pretty penny there wasn't another one after the back-to-back fights with the "No mas." I used to play a lot of sports trivia at the poker table, making small bets on it. I bragged a bit facetiously that I was 111-2 on such bets, because I just wouldn't bet unless I was sure, or thought I was sure, and other players would bet on any thought they had.

I would have ponied up some chips that there was no Leonard/Duran III. Just now I watched the highlights, and then checked their fight records to make sure it wasn't AI bullshyt I was watching. LOL. You win some you lose some.

Usyk vs Verhoeven was big news in Netherlands and they were writing about Verhoeven as if he had a chance and how he got stiffed by the ref.

I suppose in reality it was just another money fight, with Verhoeven standing no ****ing chance.
