The best to ever do it. **** 2024

I remember being at the game where bonds passed McGwire, was a contract year for bonds, and in the post game mays gave a speech celebrating bonds with the entire crowd chanting at bonds ‘four more years, four more years’ and mays had enough of that and told everyone ‘y’all better shut up now.’

And that’s exactly what the 40k or so still in attendance did

God damn legend

My grandfather was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan who HATED the giants and said Willie Mays was the best player he ever saw.

RIP to a legend.

I remember being a young kid and seeing "The Catch" for the first time. I lost my collective ****! Today I learned it was 450 feet in distance, that's just so amazing.

RIP to the Say Hey Kid.

Was it actually 450ft?

Fwiw I've always thought baseball would be better with deeper fences. A ball over the wall is the end of all the fun. A ball that stays in the park leads to great catches, long throws, baserunning, triples, etc.

I hate cheap home runs especially. 400 to the corners, 425 to the gaps, and 450 to center would be fun.

These were the dimensions of the polo grounds in 1954

Left field and right field were incredibly short and had an upper deck that hung over the field so on fly balls were even shorter .

So based on those dimensions 440ft.

Goes along with the point I was making. That great catch only happened because the park allowed it to. Otherwise that's a home run.

Deeper fences would cause hitters to stop uppercutting their swings. More contact style hitting and balls in play. More emphasis on speed/defense in the outfield.
