I don't get that at all - double 7 is right by double 16 so how can you play for double 16 routinely if the angle of the darts/blocking is such a factor?
Even if there is a marginal factor there (which it can only be given the size of the double), giving up one dart at least with 100% certainty is a huge premium. If robots played darts, with the same flight trajectory as human players, but with perfect strategy then I'd be prepared to bet that they never ever split doubles.
The only way it makes sense to me if if a player is so worried about hitting a single 7, or whatever, that if badly impacts on their aim. This may actually be the case but it's a real sign of weakness and I'd love it if I was a real player and I saw someone do this against me.
