Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

Mainly, a top-10 matches list would give me an excuse to spend all day watching spectacular wrestling.

I've watched it like 20 times ... the last 10 minutes plus overtime is brilliant, well thought out and well executed ... but the first 50 minutes drag (not the wrestlers' fault) and a full-tilt 30-minute match where they didn't have to pace themselves so much would have been better. Now tell me I'm crazy :-D (I concede the "Ironman Match" stipulation made me anticipate the match going into WM XII more than a regular match would have, so I'll give it that.)
I actually do put the blame on the wrestlers. The Hart/HBK real-life feud had just started to blossom here, and neither guy wanted to give a fall to the other. There was absolutely no reason for this other than neither guy wanted to put the other over any more than was absolutely necessary. If it was designed to finish at, say, 2-2, you would have seen a lot more action in the middle section and it would have been a much better match imo.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

I think Ross is a big reach given all the other undrafted announce talent that's out there.

I don't love the Goldberg or Bautista (and kinda Lesnar, but I think he's a lot better in ring) picks. Monsters with limited movesets are great for one hot run, but don't offer a ton of value in terms of longevity. Maybe it's just how I would think about putting together a promotion, but I want guys that I can craft diverse storylines around, and they just offer little in terms of flexibility. (that's also why there's sick value late in the draft, because there's so many guys who you can build around forever that will be available).

Never thought of it that way ... very possible. Probably a combination of pacing and this factor. I mean, the guys both looked exhausted at the end anyway.

Are all of the feds going to put on a PPV at the end of this, and then us fans get to choose which one to "buy"?

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

My personal top 10 (no particular order):

Steamboat vs. Flair, Clash of the Champions 6, NWA World title, 2/3 falls
Steamboat vs. Flair, WrestleWar 89, NWA World title
Savage vs. Steamboat, WrestleMania III, WWF IC title
Royal Rumble 1992, Flair wins vacant WWF World title
Savage vs. Ultimate Warrior, WrestleMania VII, career-ending match
Hart vs. Austin, WrestleMania XIII, submission match
Flair vs. Savage, WrestleMania VIII, WWF World title
Hart vs. UNDRAFTED, Summerslam 92, WWF IC title
Angle vs. Benoit, Royal Rumble 2004, WWF World title
Hart Foundation vs. Austin/UNDRAFTED/UNDRAFTED/UNDRAFTED, Canadian Stampede

Yeah, I play favourites a lot.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

A lot of people rank the Flair/Steamboat WrestleWar match higher. Not me. I love the 2/3 falls one.

I've delayed a top match list because I'm browsing through PWI 500 lists looking for late-round sleepers :-D

Excellent list here. I would probably tack on the Michaels/Taker Hell in a Cell somewhere along with either the Bret/Owen from Wrestlemania or Summerslam.

All three of those would make my top 20 for sure.

Taker/Warrior
DRAWING POWER: Taker 7, Warrior 7
IN-RING WORK: Taker 7, Warrior 2
MIC SKILLS: Taker 6, Warrior 2
CHARISMA: Taker 8, Warrior 8
LONGEVITY: Taker 9, Warrior 3
FEUD POTENTIAL: 6
TOTAL POINTS: 65
Note: I just don't like Warrior, so that skews things.
You realize Warrior has almost unparalleled drawing power and charisma right? I guess I just find all the personal venom, dislike, and really strong opinions about people in professional wrestling hilarious. It's all fun theater.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

Taker/Mankind Hell in a Cell was awesome as well. Chokeslamming through the cage (albeit unintentionally, although wtf did they think was going to happen when you're throwing a 300+ pound dude through a flimsy chain link fence) was ridiculous.

I'm not sold Warrior had all-time great drawing power. Also, an 8 charisma is pretty damn high.

Yeah this always cracked me up. The freaking chain-link supports were cracking just from them walking up there (both guys nearly fell through one section before Foley did his infamous announce table bump). When Taker set up for the chokeslam ... I practically knew what was coming. But I STILL marked out.

Pretty sure that was intentional. At least that's the impression I got in Mick's first book (a must-read, BTW).

I never put that match in any top x lists because there wasn't anything to it besides the two Holy **** spots (those WERE a couple of immortal spots, though).

I didn't get that vibe at all. I think Mick was pretty surprised.

I thought he knew he was going through the roof, but that he didn't know the chair was going to land on him.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

Everything I read before I took Undertaker suggested that was unintentional.

Reading wiki pages for various guys and seeing how many died at young ages under unfortunate circumstances is kind of depressing me.

The whole thing was unintentional. Mick wrote that he really wished he had put that chair somewhere else :-D

I'll have to reread the book. Although that does explain why they gimmicked the ring for his HiaC with HHH.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

Going through the PWI 500s is making me both laugh at how some of these clowns were ever top 100, and cringe that we passed on guys like Piper, Rude and Steamboat for Benoit.

(I still kinda like the Ross pick by the way ... although had Rude been there and I still went with Ross, I'd probably want to shoot myself.)

"Have a Nice Day" is a "read every couple years" book for me, it's that damn good. I'm a sportswriter and I'll never write anything that good.
