Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

We were insta-picking Y2J or The Legend Killer at #35 if either fell to us. I guess that leaves us *undrafted*, *undrafted* and let's not forget *undrafted*. One time Lee!

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

"You can draft any wrestler that wrestled for a major organization within the United States. This will be a very loose rule and hopefully you guys just stay within the spirit of the draft while making a selection."

I assumed this meant Inoki would be available. We can always take our backup if not.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

I really think the rule should be, anyone who wrestled primarily in the U.S. ... I could probably find at least one match every major Japanese star wrestled in the U.S. and it changes everything IMO.

I mean, if I knew Kobashi were available, I'd have argued to the death to snag him.

maybe we should define it a bit more then, because Kobashi, Misawa, Baba, Tenyru, Tenzen, and Kensuke Sasaki have all wrestled a bit in the US, but I certainly wouldn't say that they have really wrestled in the US. It would also clarify where Muto should be slotted a bit better too

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

Muta had a run in WCW that was long/successful enough that I had him on my board.

Inoki did have a WWF title or two, while Kobashi was never in WCW/WWF/TNA (to my knowledge) so I don't mind it.

Fully agreed. I'd figure a japanese star that had a decent tenure in the US would be fine, but we'd be drafting what they did in the US/Stampede as opposed to what they did in JPW, NJPW, AJPW, or NOAH. Obviously more Jr HWs will be open to picking as some major japanese Jr HW stars have done some decent stints in the US/Stampede

I'm unaware of Inoki ever holding a WWE title.

Inoki had his WWF title in Japan and maybe wrestled a few matches in MSG, not really an "American" japenese star imo

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

I love love love the Inoki pick... but I'm not sure you get much out of it per the rules? I was going to avoid the Japanese completely because it wasn't clear to me if their entire career was relevant to the discussion. Totally awesome wrestler though.

Alright since UT isn't on and in the interest of moving things along, we'll go with our alternate pick:

(again, too old for music lol)

When you said you were going in a different direction, you sure meant it. I don't know enough about wrestling pre-1980s to even make a comment.

There were at least a couple WWF titles that were defended pretty much exclusively in Japan. Inoki held one of those.

I definitely wouldn't count those titles as North American titles, then.

Seriously this guy should have gone in the top 10. He was #5 on my board.

i'm pretty sure he held the actual WWF title once and I think he held the NWA title at one point too, but those were during japan tours and he usually dropped it back before the american that he won it off of went back to North America

obviously a reign with the WWF LHW title before the WWF re-introduced it shouldn't count

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

I like the Perfect pick although I have a couple others rated higher. It's a shame he never won a WWE/WCW world title, he was good enough to. If his peak had been mid-90s instead of late-80s/early-90s, I feel pretty sure he would have.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

Sammartino is inevitably going to lead to, "Can the dominant wrestlers of the 60s/70s translate to pro wrestling in 2009?" I don't know for sure. It was a much less athletic and artistic business back then IMO.
