Well yeah, I mean, that said, I wouldn't have drafted Punk there or maybe at all, but I'll be interested to see who he takes in the subsequent rounds to build around him.

Bret refused to lose a pretty famous match one time.

Brett was my favorite wrestler for many years. Then I got older and thought DX was awesome because they were telling people to suck it. Now I kinda feel bad that I just totally turned on him for no reason.

I don't know that Bret totally screwed Bret ... there's probably some truth on all sides of that mess ... but his belief that Shawn and Hunter have "destroyed the business" and that Shawn "couldn't change" despite becoming a born-again Christian ... dude needs to let it go.

EDIT: If anything Bret's only confirmed Shawn's statements that Bret is his own biggest mark.

I just posted the Bret Screwed Bret thing as a joke because I think it became a pretty popular sign at events. I'ved watched that documentary like three times and it's very fascinating. Him punching Vince's lights out is so great. Hunter and Michaels seemed to feel genuinely surprised and upset about it afterward.

I really like these rankings and I would even if you didn't have Vince at #1. Looks pretty similar to how I would rank things thus far.

Can you explain why? Looking for reasons why people don't like the Vince pick.

meh, he's Canadian and didn't want to drop the title in his last show in Canada, can't hold it against him imo.

I don't know where to begin to rank Vince. I love it and hate it for different reasons.

He has claimed it had nothing to do with being in Canada. It's in his DVD.

EDIT: I think Bret's side of it had everything to do with Shawn, Shawn's actions and what Bret thought of them. Bret gives a pretty detailed account of it all from his side in his book. I can't remember everything.

Without a doubt Bret loved him some Bret. I just sort of feel bad for him because Vince decided that Bret wasn't going to fit into his future plans, so he convinced him to join WCW in a passive aggressive way (told Bret that his future involved lots of losses to Michaels before winning the title back... just to lose it to Austin at Wrestlemania XIV). As Bret was a complete company man up to that point, that treatment (inc. Montreal) is totally disgusting.

This is of course assuming that Bret really only wanted a dignified exit from the WWF. If there was any incentive whatsoever from Bischoff to bring the belt on WCW I cannot really blame McMahon.

Who really knows the full story? McMahon may be the only one, and he may never tell it.

I just wish Bret could bury the damn hatchet, show up on Raw (or Smackdown or whatever) and shake Shawn's hand. They're two of the greatest ever. I hate that Bret's holding onto all this animosity and bitterness.

The other part that bugs me is, if you read Bret's book, it sure seems a lot of his dislike of Shawn stems from homophobia. That's just really disappointing.

OK, can't just select on trade value. I'd be too pissed if I didn't end up with someone I really wanted at the top of the draft. With the 15th overall pick of the draft, I select:

Spoiler:

Rob Van Dam definitely has the ability to single-handedly carry a company as the top face, and also has the versatility to play an awesome heel later on if need be. When he first came to the WWE during the Invasion storyline, he went from the midcard to being one of the most over wrestlers on the roster in a few short months despite being there at the same time as mega-stars like Austin, Angle, and The Rock.

He got depushed pretty badly and it killed a lot of his momentum, but when he finally got his world title run, he was again insanely over to the point that he was a very successful World champion before Vince made the inexplicable decision to have him drop the belt and eventually release him over some stupid pot charge.

And this wasn't even RVD turned up to 11. I didn't see much of his ECW run, but his matches there are still the ones that diehard fans remember him most for as he was far and away the most important wrestler to the 3rd of the big 3 companies during pro wrestling's glory days. This is also how we know that he can be an effective heel as he did a great job with this during his time in ECW.

Ignoring how the crowd reacts to him, RVD definitely has what it takes skill-wise too. He has the unique ability to make the crowd react to him solely through his matches without even speaking whatsoever and has put on several classics, but his mic skills which are somewhat criticized are actually pretty solid if given the right context.

He's not just going to prattle on and entertain the crowd when he has nothing to work with the way someone like The Rock would, but the cool hippie stoner that once in a blue moon gets really angry and wants to tear someone's head off is pretty solid as a wrestling character. I'm not going to look online for promos right now, but he cut a great promo on Jericho after getting screwed out of the title against him in late 2002 and cut a couple pretty decent promos on Cena during their feud too. As long as you use him right, there's no reason he can't be the top guy for a strong federation.

Career highlights:

-WWE Champion
-ECW Champion
-6-time Intercontinental Champion
-WWE Grand Slam champion
-Longest reigning ECW Television champion (700 days)

I love RVD and he's what got me (slightly) into ECW back in the day. I didn't watch wrestling much/at all from 2003-2008 but RVD is a guy who should have been the face of the company IMO.

I like the RVD pick although you could have gotten him later. Criminally misused by WWE imo.

Punk pick is bad but not as bad as people think. He's pretty clearly on a path to being the top guy in the industry.

I still don't get the love for the Vince pick. It's established that he isn't doing the "owner" type stuff, so we're putting him as #1 overall as a character and average booker/announcer?

Thoughts on RVD: Very, very good worker who I will stop just short of calling great, but his character I just never fell in love with, and I'm not sold he actually could carry a company. He'd be a guy I'd love landing as my second or third piece, but not quite this high. I may be in the minority here.
